After living in Thailand for 20 years, receiving hundreds of foot massages, and teaching Thai Massage courses to thousands of students since 2001 I have a pretty good understanding of this issue.

There are two points of view to consider:

The receiver’s perspective – the foot massage client

The giver’s perspective – the therapist

1. The foot massage CLIENT perspective:

From personal experience, I can say that I don’t like the foot massage sticks at all. They feel pokey and often quite painful to me.

Since they are rigid and hard, they lack the soft and sensitive quality of the human hand. There is no feeling transmitted through them.

On the other hand, let’s say you are in Thailand and walk into a foot massage shop. You have large and strong feet, and you end up with a female therapist who has small hands and not much power. In this case, you might appreciate the added intensity of the stick.

2. The foot massage THERAPIST perspective

For the therapist, the stick is a way to use more pressure with less effort. It makes it easy to apply deep pressure on one point without overusing the thumbs.

It also allows more pinpoint precision work when using the sharper end of the stick.

However, just from looking at it, it is hard to imagine how this could possibly be enjoyable.

Not only that but modern medical science employs leeches for surgery and other microsurgery purposes because they secrete anticoagulants in form of peptides and proteins that help to keep blood clots at bay. Hence the wounds quickly heal by keeping the blood flowing through them. Most importantly, leech therapy is currently experiencing a resurgence due to its ease and low cost of use in reducing problems.

How does it work?

Medicinal leeches, which are most commonly found in Hungary or Sweden, have three jaws, each with a single row of teeth. They use their teeth to penetrate a person’s skin and inject anticoagulants present in their saliva. After that, the leeches are permitted to drain blood from the patient for approximately about half an hour (this translates to only a few millilitres of blood per leech).

Alison Angold, a beauty and massage therapist, agrees eyebrow shaving is generally safe.

Angold points out, though, that the area of skin underneath the brow is more sensitive than other areas we usually shave, since it’s thinner and lies directly on the brow bone.

This means there’s an increased risk of nicks, cuts, and bleeding.

She also notes there are several other effective options for hair removal, like tweezing or waxing, preferably done by a professional.

“The eyebrow is a small area,” she says. “Shaving here is harder, so you’ll need to be precise.”

How does shaving affect your eyebrows?

When you shave anything, Healy explains, you’re not removing the hair from the root. Instead, you’re cutting the hair at the surface where it breaks through the skin.

“You’ll see stubble very quickly, because you’re not removing the hair in its entirety,” he says.

Angold also says regrowth will appear coarse and “stubble-like.” Hairs are likely to be spiky and grow directly out of the skin, instead of laying flat, which may cause an unnatural look.

The quick answer: A piercing needle is much better than a piercing gun, for many reasons. Needles are generally cleaner, more accurate, and less painful than guns.

The Pros and Cons of Piercing Guns

Pros

Accessibility: Most places use guns since it’s easier to train someone to use them, so if you’re looking for a place that uses a gun, it’ll probably be easier than if you’re trying to find a place that uses needles.
Convenience: It’s convenient to get your ears pierced while at the mall shopping.
Affordability: It’s sometimes cheaper to get a piercing at the mall or at a booth versus a qualified piercer. There’s less skill and training required, so they can charge less.
Speed: It’s over fast, with one quick pull of the trigger.

Cons

Tissue Risk: There can be major tissue trauma when a piercing is performed with a gun. The piercing guns hold blunt studs, and when these studs are forced through the tissues, it literally rips the tissue in order to make room for the jewelry. If your piercing will go through the cartilage, it can shatter with blunt force.
Messiness: When the blunt stud is shot through your skin, it can get messy. A wipe of an alcohol or antiseptic pad is not going to remove all those blood particles, however, and piercing guns cannot be properly sterilized. They get a lot of use and come into contact with bodily fluid… however, a simple swipe of an alcohol swab between uses is not enough to sterilize the instrument. Some claim that the instrument never comes into contact with the skin, but the piercer’s hands do, and they’re touching the potentially contaminated gun and are further contaminating it with your blood.

Training: Mall employees and booth workers generally undergo a whopping two-week course on how to use a piercing gun. That’s not a lot of time to teach proper techniques for infection control or healing.
Infection Risk: Piercing guns use blunt studs that have butterfly backs. These can easily harbor bacteria and gunk, which can infect a new piercing. The studs are sometimes made of a low-grade material that causes an allergic reaction, scarring, and infection.
