Some DIY beauty tricks are totally worth it. You can save time and money by dyeing your roots or plucking your brows in the comfort of your bathroom. But laser hair removal?

While the procedure used to only be available in the dermatologist’s office, these days you can buy small devices to zap away hair yourself.

But before you kiss your razor goodbye, find out what dermatologist Rachel Ward, MD, has to say about the safety and effectiveness of these devices.

Permanent hair removal

Laser hair removal devices work by killing the hair follicle. But hair grows in cycles, and the lasers only damage follicles during an active cycle of hair growth. So it takes multiple treatments, about a month apart, to completely stop hair from regrowing.

For some people, laser hair removal is not entirely permanent. You might need a maintenance treatment every year or so to keep stray hairs from cropping up.

The process doesn’t come cheap. Professional laser hair removal can cost a couple hundred bucks per treatment, and it might take half a dozen sessions (or more) to knock out every follicle. You could rack up more than a thousand dollars in pursuit of a bald bikini line.

Meanwhile, you can order an at-home hair removal laser for somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 or $500. At first glance, it seems like a better investment. But there are some important caveats, Dr. Ward says.

At-home laser hair removal: Pros and cons

There are two types of at-home devices for hair removal. One is a true laser, and the other uses intense pulsed light. Both types remove hair, and both are less powerful than the device you’ll find at the dermatologist’s office, Dr. Ward explains.

That’s good and bad. On the one hand, with less power comes less responsibility. These devices are safe for amateurs to use at home, so you don’t have to worry about singeing yourself in the name of smooth skin. (Still, make sure you follow the directions exactly — because laser.)

Your skin hydration can change a lot during a short period of time. The weather, products on your routine, change of atmospheres and even your alimentary habits and sleep will affect your skin moisture.

There are many devices on the market that can measure your skin hydration in a matter of seconds so you will know if a more powerful moisturizer is needed or if your new products are working. Also, dermatologists can use these devices to provide diagnostics and follow a treatment result. 

Most devices with this objective will measure the stratum corneum water content, the quantity of water that is present on the external layer of the skin. For this, they will use the electrical properties of the skin (capacitance, conductance, or impedance) to obtain the results in real time. These methods are noninvasive and very easy to use, available from different manufacturers and provide reliable results.

Among the wide number of options, we can cite the Corneometer®, which is one from the German company Courage & Khazaka and is based on capacitance principle. It is mostly used in cosmetic research and by dermatologists and is known for being very harsh in dry conditions. The results are given in arbitrary values. The higher the value is, the higher the skin hydration will be.

The SkinUp® is more portable and measures the skin moisture, oiliness, and elasticity through the impedance principle. The measurements are given in arbitrary hydration percentage units and although it is not very cited in the scientific literature, it has a lower price range and works very well for its objective.

Clue rated top menstrual tracking app

Clue was named the top free menstrual tracking app in a [study released this week by the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, a publication of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

The paper, “Evaluation of Smartphone Menstrual Cycle Tracking Applications Using an Adapted APPLICATIONS Scoring System” was published May 9 by Professor Paula Castaño and team*.*

The study scored apps based on accuracy, features and functionality. Clue earned 13 out of 15 possible points based on a survey of 25 different features, the highest score of all apps evaluated.

Castaño and colleagues found that most menstrual tracking apps are inaccurate and only 20 out of more than 1,000 apps met accuracy criteria. Here is the final ranking:

A waist trainer is a shaping garment similar to a girdle. The waist trainer pulls a person’s midsection in as tight as possible. The idea behind a waist trainer is that the pulling action gives the person a sleeker, smaller waist.

Waist trainers usually consist of a combination of tough fabric and hard fibers. Hooks, Velcro, lacing, or other strong fasteners hold the trainer tightly in place.

Advocates believe that it is possible to “train” the waist to retain a slimmer shape after frequent wearing of the garment over an extended period. Some people suggest that wearing a waist trainer while working out can aid in weight loss.

Do they work?

Waist trainers work in a similar way to corsets, which fell out of fashion due to discomfort and health concerns.

A waist trainer can produce a temporary reduction in waist size or circumference, and a person will typically see immediate results. However, as soon as they take off the waist trainer, their waist will no longer look smaller.
