UK scientists develop 30-minute test kit for COVID-19

Scientists in Oxford have developed a faster-acting test to establish whether patients are infected with the coronavirus. A team from the University of Oxford’s Engineering Science Department and the Oscar Suzhou Centre for Advance Research (OSCAR) have been working to improve upon the current process, which can take up to two hours to produce a result and requires specialised equipment.

The newly developed test produces highly accurate results in half an hour. Its sensitivity enables it to identify the virus earlier than can be achieved with the current test, and it only requires a standard heat block to work. This could be particularly beneficial in rural or more isolated areas without access to the complicated equipment needed currently as it facilitates testing in, for instance, community health centres.

The test has already been trialled on 16 clinical samples in Shenzhen Luohou People’s Hospital in China and achieved a 100% diagnostic success rate. It is hoped that it will be rolled out to testing clinics within the next two weeks. Read more

Minimally invasive procedures for chronic nasal airway conditions

Founded by medtech serial entrepreneur Scott Wolf, Aerin Medical provides ENT physicians with tissue-sparing solutions for the treatment of nasal airway conditions to improve quality of life in patients. A physician can use the company’s proprietary technology to apply temperature-controlled energy to a specific area of tissue inside the nose in order to resolve a person’s nasal problem without surgery.

“Otolaryngologists use Aerin’s platform technology to treat their patients suffering from nasal airway obstruction and chronic rhinitis — massive and debilitating conditions that affect tens of millions in the US annually,” Aerin CEO Matt Brokaw told MDO. “We’re gratified to be working with the physician specialty to advance the future of office-based options for patients, and to be supporting near-term interest in procedures that minimize aerosolized virus risk for clinical teams.” Read more

JADE FACE ROLLING 101: HOW TO DO IT AND WHY

Made typically from jade, rose quartz or another crystal, these paint-roller type tools are designed to be used to gently massage the face and stimulate the lymphatic system to get rid of toxins, ease muscle tension, decrease puffiness and stimulate blood-flow to increase your skin’s glow. This act of massage over the skin (always with an oil or serum for slip) is key to draining excess fluid from the face and, with regular use, will tone and lift the skin.

This act of massage over the skin (always with an oil or serum for slip) is key to draining excess fluid from the face and, with regular use, will tone and lift the skin.

Why is face rolling so good?

“Face rolling works on so many levels, from stimulating blood flow so you get more nutrients and oxygen to your skin, to draining fluid, to giving a deep-tissue massage,” explains aesthetician Joanna Czech, whose cryo roller is a key part of her famous facial – both Kim Kardashian and Cate Blanchett are regulars. “The idea is to recreate my manual massage. I really hate massaging my own face, so making a tool that did it for me made sense,” she says. Her cryo roller works on a deep level: you literally see it lifting and holding the cheek muscles as you roll.

According to LA aesthetician Angela Caglia (whose famous rose-quartz face mask could have an Insta account of its own), rose-quartz rollers not only help to drain and contour the face, they’re also believed to help boost self-esteem, while jade rollers are said to ward off negative energy. “Plus, the stones stay naturally cold, so rolling in the morning gets the circulation going and helps calm inflammation and redness.

Portable Elight SHR VE Beauty Equipment

SHR stands for Super Hair Removal, a technology of hair removal which is having a sweeping success.
The system combines laser technology and the benefits of the pulsating light method achieving painless
results. SHR combined with “In Motion” represents a breakthrough in permanent hair removal with light
technology. The treatment is more pleasant than with the conventional systems and your skin is better
protected.

Difference between traditional IPL technology and SHR

Traditional IPL technologies employ short impulses of approximately 2-300 milliseconds, applying a vast amount of energy (12-120 Joule on one square centimeter). Energy is transported to the hair root through melanin, where warmth of 65-72° Celsius is produced. Energy reaches the root of the hair follicle solely through melanin. Skin and red blood cells have a similar absorption coefficient as melanin and therefore also absorb the high levels of energy produced by the IPL methods.

SHR technology, on the other hand, utilizes the melanin path only partially (50%), it also influences the stem cells that produce new hair. Combining In-Motion technology, it gently warms the skin helping penetrate down to the follicles which produce hair growth.

In a word, Conventional devices, not using SHR technology, merely transport energy along the melanin to the follicles.  SHR gently transports the energy through the skin and through the melanin to the hair follicles.

Research has shown that a slower, but longer heating process is considerably more effective for permanent hair removal than high and short levels of energy. Therefore, when using SHR, the device is passed over the tissue multiple times (in motion) using low energy but a high rate of repetition (up to 10Hz, i.e. 10 times per second) instead of using the traditional method with multi, high-energy impulses.

Light Surgical, Celling mounted

Surgical lights, also known as surgical lighting or operating lights, are mainly used in hospital operating rooms and ambulatory surgery centers, but can also be used in various locations throughout the facility to provide high quality lighting for procedures. Examples include emergency rooms, labor and delivery, examination rooms, and anywhere where procedures are completed.

They are used by clinicians, surgeons and proceduralists. A surgical light illuminates the operative site on a patient for optimal visualization during a procedure.1 Surgical lights can provide hours of bright light without excessively heating the patient or staff. A variety of lights are available to meet the needs of providing optimal visualization during surgery and procedures. An examination light is used during medical exams, while operating room lights are used during surgical procedures.

HISTORY OF SURGICAL LIGHTS

Before electricity allowed lightbulbs to illuminate an operating room, candles were used as a light source during a procedure. Additionally, surgeries were performed during daylight hours so surgeons could use the natural sunlight for illumination.2 Surgical lights as they are recognized today have evolved over more than a century since electricity was first discovered in 1879, with surgical light manufacturers continuously working to improve lighting conditions for surgeons and OR staff.

TYPES OF SURGICAL LIGHTS

There are various types of surgical lights, and each type plays specific roles in illumination before, during, and after a medical procedure. They can be categorized by lamp type or mounting configuration. Two lamp types are conventional (incandescent) and LED (light emitting diode).Read More…
