Smart Capsule for Sampling Microbiome of GI Tract

The details of what goes on within the GI tract are still largely unknown to medical science. Bacteria come in a huge variety and the microbiome within the gut can be radically different from place to place. To better understand the bacterial composition of the human GI tract, researchers at Purdue University have developed a 3D printed ingestable capsule that can capture samples throughout the gut and safely transport these outside the body for testing.

The technology consists of a resin pill-like device that has a pH sensitive tip. When the capsule reaches an area of the gut with the appropriate pH level, the cap dissolves and allows intestinal fluid to come in. Inside, a hydrogel aborbs the liquid and expands. This expansion causes a plug to push against the opening where the cap was and seals off the capsule. Once excreted, the capsule can be unscrewed and the sample removed using a pair of tweezers.

There’s nothing expensive that’s required to make such capsules and the researchers believe that each one can be manufactured for only about a dollar. The next steps will involve testing the devices in live porcine models and developing a prototype that is more suited for human applications. Read more…

Canon Medical Unveils SOLTUS 500 Portable X-Ray

Canon Medical is releasing a compact new mobile digital X-ray. The SOLTUS 500, powered by a 40kW generator, has touch screens both at the main unit and at the collimator, making it easier and quicker to operate it around patients. Detectors are charged right on the device and stored within a special bin, plus special Canon technology allow the detectors operate at a long range when necessary.

“Today’s hospitals are challenged with productivity demands and it’s imperative that their X-ray systems are able to perform seamlessly where and when they need them,” said Jay Aboujaoude, managing director, X-Ray Business Unit, Canon Medical Systems USA, Inc, in a press release. “The SOLTUS 500 meets that need without compromising on image quality, which is made possible with the unparalleled Canon Medical detector technology that is at the heart of the system.”

Some of the features that Canon is touting on the SOLTUS 500:

Enhanced ease-of-use with intuitive tubehead controls, including an 8.4-inch touchscreen display and dual collimator controls for increased access and accuracy.

  • Increased detector wireless range and productivity with Canon Medical patented technologies. The Distributed Antenna System optimizes detector wireless range, and the Enhanced Workflow Package supports the exam from start to finish at point of care. Read more…

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Shares More About Its Implantable Brain Stimulator

Neuralink, one of Elon Musk’s newest ventures, was founded in 2016 but little has been known about the startup other than that it would somehow actualize Musk’s vision of a revolutionary implantable brain device. During a webcast last week, Musk and his team unveiled a bit more about what the company has been up to, including a live demo involving a trio of pigs.

The Neuralink implant, known as the “Link,” is essentially a miniaturized version of a deep brain stimulator. It’s a coin-sized device with a bundle of tiny wires, each five times thinner than a strand of human hair, protruding from it. The wires are meant to be embedded in the cortical surface of the brain, able to record continuously record 1024 channels of neural signals at the same time. The Link contains an inductively-rechargeable battery that lasts all day, a 6-axis inertial measurement unit to track head position and movement, additional sensors to measure things like temperature and pressure, and a Bluetooth Low Energy antenna to connect the implant with an app on the wearer’s smartphone.

Musk described the Link as a “Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires” and frequently alluded to terminology associated with computers.

Unlike most existing deep brain stimulation devices, which are implanted near the chest and rely on electrode leads to reach the brain, the Link is placed through the skull. Musk claims that the device could be implanted in less than an hour in an outpatient setting without the need for general anesthesia. And because of the less-invasive nature of the device, it could potentially be removed or “upgraded” easily. Read more…

Smartwatch Tracks Levels of Medication in the Body for Personalized Dosing

Researchers at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and the Stanford School of Medicine have developed a smartwatch that uses electrochemical analysis to track levels of a drug in the body by analyzing a patient’s sweat. The system could help with finding the correct drug and dose for a given patient in order to maximize therapeutic potential and avoid side-effects.

At present, most drugs are prescribed based on standard guidelines and can be tailored based on parameters such as age and weight, but this rarely includes any additional personalization. However, there are dramatic differences in how people respond to different drugs. A large part of this difference is down to how much of a drug is present in the circulation over time, with inter-individual differences in pharmacokinetics being responsible.

For certain drugs, clinicians use repeated blood draws and lab analysis to keep track of their levels in the blood. However, this is time consuming, expensive, and inconvenient for patients. These researchers wanted to develop a wearable smartwatch that could provide continuous real-time measurement of drug levels in the sweat. Sweat can act as a proxy for the blood, and for many drugs, levels in the sweat and the blood are very similar.

“We wanted to create a wearable technology that can track the profile of medication inside the body continuously and non-invasively,” said Sam Emaminejad, a researcher involved in the study. “This way, we can tailor the optimal dosage and timing of the intake for each individual. And using this personalization approach, we can improve the efficacy of the therapeutic treatments.” Read more…
