Core Meditation

Imagine the sensation of holding a small but nicely solid wooden teacup in your hands. Now imagine that cup can purr like a large cat; if you match your breath to the rhythm of the purring, you could either be calmed down or energized, depending on your preference. Further imagine that this cup is taking a key measure of your cardiovascular health, and can help you improve it in the space of a few minutes every day.

Core competence

Then along came the Core meditation trainer, which is what you might get if you crossed the Muse’s EEG technology with a physical manifestation of the Apple Watch’s Breathe app. There’s no calibration necessary with the Core; you open the app, you pick it up and you’re good to go. While there is a dizzying array of meditations to choose from if you dig in, the app’s algorithm selects one for you on its home screen so you can start right way.

Practice breathwork meditation from sources such as Weil’s audiobook, and you’ll find yourself doing a lot of counting in your head — or forgetting how many seconds you’re supposed to hold your breath in any given form. Core makes it easy because you can both see (via a circle of lights that appear in the middle of the Core’s white top) and feel (via vibrations) how you’re supposed to breathe.

Just as addictive as the breathing meditations were the results you get at the end of every Core session. Core uses two measurements from your thumbs: your heart rate, and your Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The latter is an important measure of heart health that is little used outside hospitals. You shouldn’t read too much into the Core HRV score — as the app points out, it can vary depending on your age, genetics and a variety of circumstances.  Read More..

Soft Electronics for Advanced Heart Catheters

Researchers at George Washington University and Northwestern University have developed a new class of soft devices that can provide new functionality for catheters used in cardiac procedures. The new materials are soft electronics, including stretchable sensors and actuators, that when applied to the surface of a catheter system, could greatly assist in diagnosing and treating cardiac conditions.

Catheter-based therapy for conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias is well-established. However, current catheters are quite rigid and do not conform particularly well to the soft tissues in which they are used. This makes it difficult to assess and treat such tissues comprehensively and requires significant effort and time to move the catheter around during a procedure. Existing catheters can also perform only a limited number of functions, meaning that several different types of catheters may be required during the same procedure.

To address these issues, these researchers have developed a new type of catheter that conforms well with soft tissues, making it easier to access and treat cardiac conditions while significantly reducing the time required for each procedure. Moreover, the new catheter contains soft electronics, such as temperature and pressure sensors, that allow it to analyze the tissue around itself. Via…

Keep A Breast Foundation and Carbon Health Partner on Self-Check App

Over 300,000 women in the US are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, with an estimated 12,000 of those diagnosed expected to be under the age of 40. Early detection is pivotal to ensuring a high likelihood of survival, which is why the Keep A Breast Foundation is doubling down on the importance of self-checks with their enhanced mobile app. According to Keep A Breast Medical Director Dr. Joel Evans, “The breast self-check is the simplest and easiest way to protect your breasts. Knowing your ‘normal’ is the only way to know if something needs further evaluation, which is the most important part of early detection.”

Launched in 2016, Keep A Breast’s “Check Yourself!” app has been popular, domestically and abroad, as a helpful tool supporting breast cancer self-checks, education, and awareness. Building on that success, the foundation’s enhanced app will, in addition to expanding its current suite of content, focus on giving users access to clinical support in the event an abnormality is identified during a self-check. Carbon Health, a technology-enabled healthcare provider, is powering the clinical support feature, leveraging its robust virtual care capabilities. With the updated app, users who identify something concerning during a self-check will be able to access direct, real-time clinical support.

Aligned with Keep A Breast’s mission, the app will continue to be specifically designed (aesthetic direction by Tina Tictone) for younger users who the foundation highlights as often left out of the breast cancer conversation. The app is available as a free download from the Apple Store and Google Play. Read more…

Plasma Fibroblast Therapy

Plasma fibroblast therapy is an aesthetic procedure some healthcare providers may offer as an alternative to laser, injections, or surgical therapies to tighten and improve the appearance of skin.

This therapy is fairly new to the facial and cosmetic treatment scene.

It play an important role in helping skin wounds heal as well as maintaining skin firmness and tightness.

Plasma  therapy uses a pen-like device that discharges a high-frequency electric current to small areas of the skin.

The plasma tip doesn’t directly touch the skin, but instead releases a targeted current just above the skin. The hot current creates small holes, or micro-injuries, in the skin’s layer.

  • breaks down proteins in the skin
  • encourages tissue regeneration
  • stimulates fibroblast activity
  • causes tissue contraction (tightening)

What are the benefits of plasma fibroblast therapy?

Plasma fibroblast therapy is a nonsurgical treatment that may be used to treat the following conditions:

Cosmetic specialists may also use plasma fibroblast therapy as an alternative to lip fillers to make the lips look fuller.

Does it work?

When plasma fibroblast therapy is performed in a safe, controlled environment, it can:

  • improve skin texture
  • offer mild-to-moderate skin tightening effects

Each participant received one full-face treatment every 3 weeks. At the study’s conclusion, patients reported a 37 percent reduction in facial wrinkling and a 68 percent overall improvement in facial appearance.

Wearable Ozone Therapy Device for Chronic Wound Treatment

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a wearable device that can administer antibacterial ozone gas to chronic wound to help disinfect them. The technology could allow people to disinfect chronic wounds at home, and would be helpful in cases where wounds have been colonized by drug-resistant bacteria and aren’t responding to antibiotic therapy.

Approximately 6 million patients in the U.S. have a chronic wound. This includes many patients with diabetes who develop foot ulcers. These wounds can have a significant impact on quality of life, mobility, and the ability to work. In many cases, chronic wound can’t heal because they are infested with drug-resistant bacteria that can’t be eradicated using antibiotics.

To make matters worse, these bacteria can form a biofilm, which is a slimy collection of millions of individual bacteria and a secreted matrix, on the surface of such wounds. The biofilms protect the bacteria, making them even more difficult to eradicate.

One option is to use ozone gas to disinfect the surface of such wounds, giving them a better chance of healing. However, at present such treatment must be performed using specialized equipment, meaning that patients have to travel to a hospital or clinic every time they want to avail of it. Read more…

Treadmill in the works

Both new products could feature adjustable tablet displays to allow people to do additional workouts near the machines and not solely when they are on them. Bloomberg says the new devices could be announced “as early as next week,” ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings, which are set to be released on Sept. 10

For runners, joggers, walkers and people just looking to get their steps in, a treadmill is perhaps the ideal piece of fitness equipment to bring into your home, especially now when hitting the gym isn’t the safest option. Beyond pandemic-related restrictions, if your typical gym workout was simply jogging on a treadmill, buying one for your home might end up being a more cost-effective way to get a treadmill workout than a pricey monthly membership.

So now you’re probably thinking about that fitness goal you’ve haven’t quite met and how quickly you can get a treadmill for your home gym. Luckily (and overwhelmingly), there are hundreds of treadmills you can buy online, ranging from inexpensive treadmill options that cost a few hundred bucks to expensive treadmills costing well over $15,000.

Through my research, I learned what kinds of features to look for — shock absorption, maximum speed, running surface, automatic incline etc. — what price range is best and which are the best treadmill options for the money. Now I’m sharing that with you.

The treadmills that I tested are suited for all fitness levels and give you exercise options ranging from light jogging to an intense cardio workout to get your heart rate going. So read on to find the best treadmill for you!  Read More..
