How to Choose the Right Clay For Your Skin Type

Clay is a naturally occurring substance rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron, silica, and potassium, and it can be found in volcanic ash, sediment, and soil. Clay can be found in a number of products, from cleansers to face masks to athlete’s foot treatments.

What are the benefits of clay for skin?

Depending on the type of clay you use, clay masks can help pull out impurities from inside pores to treat acne, heal allergic skin reactions, ease the effects of sunburn, boost elasticity, and balance oil production. Clay has been shown to increase collagen production, which strengthens the structure underlying the skin.

It also has detoxifying properties that draw out impurities such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, and fungi. Some clays contain over 50 minerals! Just be sure never to use metal containers, spoons, or lids when storing or using clay as the metal will interfere with the clay’s efficacy. Instead, use glass or wooden bowls and spoons.

What’s the right clay for my skin type?

Oily or Acne-Prone

Moroccan Red Clay and White Kaolin Clay are both ideal choices for balancing oily skin and unclogging pores. They absorb excess oil and are often used in recipes for deodorants and masks.

White Kaolin Clay is a very fine and light clay, mostly made up of the mineral kaolinite, and is common in many cosmetic products. Moroccan Red Clay is mined in the mountains of Morocco and deeply cleanses the pores while stimulating circulation, yet it’s still gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Normal to Oily

Bentonite Clay, formed from volcanic ash, is the most widely used clay and perfect if you aren’t quite sure which clay is right for you. It can absorb excess oil and tighten skin simultaneously.

Bentonite Clay also has healing properties internally and is often used to treat digestive issues. Named from a large deposit found in Fort Benton, Wyoming, this clay can definitely serve double duty in your medicine cabinet. Bentonite clay’s properties not only draw out the skin’s impurities but also transfer the minerals to your skin in their place.

Sensitive or Reactive

French Green Clay, quarried originally in Southern France and then discovered elsewhere, is both detoxifying and healing. It’s an illite clay that is known to remove metals, and it gets its green color from kelp and algae.

CARTER AND JANE: The Everything Tool to Handle All of Your Skin Needs

Introducing The Carter and Jane Everything Tool! This innovative, patented tool took us years to develop, but just like our original product, The Everything Oil, we knew we could help simplify your routine, save you time and improve your skin, in a safe and healthy way. But this time, instead of turning to nature, we turned to the best engineers in tech to make it happen.

The Everything Tool is designed to be the only tool you need, with 6 unique modes designed to handle all of your skin needs.

Ionic Cleansing + Micro-current under-eye care + Moisture Infusion + EMS (electric muscle stimulation) lifting toning + RF (radio frequency) anti-aging red light therapy + Anti-inflammation blue light/cryotherapy.

Modes of The Everything Tool

“CLEAN” MODE: Dirt in the skin is negatively electrostatically charged. When the positive ion “clean” mode is activated, the magnetic head generates powerful positive ions, which attract the dirt. This softens the structures around the dirt by exerting electrostatic pressure. The dirt is then pulled from the lower layers in cortex of the skin and comes to the surface where it can be removed with cotton and cleanser.

“EYE CARE” MODE: Gentle micro-current and thermal technology is used to tighten and smooth connective tissues in the under-eye area by increasing cellular activity.

“MOISTURE” MODE: Thermal and ionic technology is used to create temporary pore dilation to improve absorbency of skincare products.

“EMS UP” MODE: EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulation) lifts, firms and contours muscles, which are attached to your skin. This provides a visible lift, reduces sagging and enhances elasticity.

“RF RED LIGHT” MODE: RF (Radio Frequency) therapy uses low energy radiation to heat the deep layer of your skin, the dermis. Red Light Therapy also increases your natural collagen production and has been shown to improve circulation and reduce inflammation.

ODACITE MON AMI FACIAL ACUPRESSURE BEAUTY TOOL

Purpose: Promote facial muscle relaxation & melt away facial tensions.

Odacite Mon Ami facial acupressure beauty tool was crafted to melt away facial tension by activating specific beauty points with light to medium pressure. This allows for a more relaxed, harmonious and younger-looking facial appearance.

Over time, perpetual tension, stress, squinting and other facial contractions will cause skin cells to be squeezed and wrinkles to form. Therefore excessive facial tension can lead to deeper wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.

With roots in Chinese medicine, the Acupressure Point Technique stimulates the flow of energy by melting contractions and removing energy blockages.

How to Do an At-Home DIY Hydrafacial

Ever since first getting a Hydrafacial, I’ve been really drawn to the idea of recreating the technique at home. After all, I know a thing or two about skincare, and from what I gathered in my experience and research, a Hydrafacial is really just a combination of a few skincare processes that aren’t risky or even very difficult to do on yourself! And the resulting glowy, silky-soft skin is hard to pass up.

So, off I went to experiment on my own face so you didn’t have to. And I’m back with the results: I’ve nailed the formula for a DIY at-home Hydrafacial-inspired treatment that rivals the real thing. And I’m giving you the secret today.

Hydrafacial is really just a combination of a few skincare processes
Hydrafacial is really just a combination of a few skincare processes

What’s so special about the Hydrafacial?

Despite their marketing (tagline: “Not a facial.”), the Hydrafacial is kind of a facial.

It toes the line between a spa facial, which is usually a surface-level, temporary skin conditioning treatment for relaxation, and a procedure, which is a more effective and targeted approach using active ingredients, lasers, or other fun things.

More specifically, a Hydrafacial is a branded version of a hydrabrasion treatment. You may have heard of its closely related cousin dermabrasion before. ‘Derm’ means skin and ‘abrasion’ is to scrub or wear away at. So it’s not hard to figure out that dermabrasion is a session of strong, physical exfoliation. Hydrabrasion is the same, except it centers around using water and chemical products to assist the exfoliation process while increasing hydration levels.

The Hydrafacial company has patented a special vacuum tool that simultaneously spits out and sucks up water in a vortex-like fashion, and uses a cartridge system to infuse the water as needed to do different things to your skin like chemically exfoliate and hydrate. Picture it as taking your skin through the platinum car wash and getting the most thorough clean of your life. If you want to read all about what a real Hydrafacial is and feels like, come with me as I narrated step-by-step my first-time experience.

Can you do a Hydrafacial on yourself at home?

Now, that all sounds a little too fancy, and like we might not be able to replicate it at home. But luckily, in my opinion, most of it is a marketing gimmick or a frivolous step. The real driving force behind the Hydrafacial’s power is the intense physical exfoliation that the rough tip of the vacuum head provides as it’s moved across the skin. This done repetitively, combined with the light chemical exfoliation in their cleansing liquids, creates the results. And we can recreate that effect pretty easily ourselves at home.

Ear irrigation is an ear cleansing method that people use to remove a buildup of earwax. Irrigation involves inserting liquid into the ears to flush the earwax out.

The medical term for earwax is cerumen. A buildup of earwax can cause symptoms such as impaired hearing, dizziness, and even ear pain.

Doctors will not recommend this for people with certain medical conditions and those who have had eardrum tube surgery. They may also have concerns about a person carrying out ear irrigation at home.

In this article, we discuss the benefits and risks of ear irrigation and explain how most people perform it.

Uses of Ear Irrigation

A doctor performs ear irrigation to remove an earwax buildup, which can cause the following symptoms:

Doctors do not usually recommend irrigating the ear unless a person’s symptoms are definitely due to earwax buildup.

Alternative options for removing excess earwax include placing earwax softener drops in the ears or mechanical removal by a doctor.

According to the authors of a 2010 systematic review, it was unclear from the existing research whether ear irrigation or mechanical methods were more beneficial for removing earwax. However, they noted that certain softener drops were effective.

People should not try to remove earwax at home with tools such as cotton swabs or hairpins due to the risk of damaging the eardrum.

Procedure

People can follow the steps below to try ear irrigation. They should use a syringe containing clean water at room temperature.

  • Sit upright with a towel on the shoulder to capture water that drains from the ear. Some people may also place a basin underneath the ear to catch the water.
  • Gently pull the ear upward and backward to allow the water to enter the ear more easily.
  • Place the syringe in the ear, inserting it up and toward the back of the ear. This position will help the earwax separate from the ear and drain out of it.
  • Gently press on the syringe to allow water to enter the ear. If a person feels pain or pressure, they should stop irrigating.
  • Dry the ear using a towel or by inserting a few drops of rubbing alcohol into the ear.
