What Should You Expect From Wisdom Teeth Removal?

If you have wisdom teeth (the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of the mouth on the top and bottom) that don’t have room to grow, they will have to be removed to avoid infection or other dental problems. This procedure should be done by a reliable dentist or an oral surgeon and can be recommended even if the impacted teeth aren’t currently causing any trouble at the moment.

In general, wisdom tooth extractions don’t result in long-term complications or risks during the procedure. However, as it requires a surgical approach that involves making an incision in the gum tissue and removing bone, it can have some (rare) complications if the instructions to be done after the procedure aren’t followed correctly. The most important things to do after the surgery are:

  • Use an ice pack to control swelling and bruising.
  • Avoid physical activity that might result in losing the blood clot from the socket for at least a week.
  • Drink lots of water after the surgery but without a straw, as it can damage the cicatrization process.
  • Eat only soft foods for the first 24 hours.
  • Be particularly gentle near the surgical wound when brushing the teeth and rinse the mouth to avoid having pieces of food between the stitches.

In conclusion, wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world and should be done at the right time to avoid severe pain and infections. The procedure requires a few days to heal correctly and go back to normal but is in most cases safe and without complications.
