Why Honey Is a Must in Your Beauty Routine

0

We love adding a drizzle of honey to a hot cup of tea or our favorite yogurt.

But did you know that honey, when applied topically, also has some incredible skin care benefits? How exactly does this pantry staple benefit your complexion, you ask? Here’s what you need to know and the right way to add it to your beauty routine.

What Is Honey

Honey is a sticky, thick liquid that bees make using the nectar they collect from flowers. While it’s most widely known as a sweetener for foods and drinks, it has a variety of medicinal uses as well—which explains why it’s often called “liquid gold.” Research shows honey can do everything from help heal burns to lessen the effects of an upset stomach to ease heartburn.

Benefits of Honey for Skin

Beyond its medicinal benefits, honey can also do wonders for your skin. “Honey is a natural antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory ingredient,” explains Marie Hayag, MD, dermatologist and founder of Fifth Avenue Aesthetics in New York City. Studies show, due to these properties, that honey can help soothe a variety of skin conditions including acne and dermatitis. “In addition, it can help promote and build collagen.” Collagen is a building block for healthy, youthful-looking skin, meaning honey is an effective anti-aging ingredient.

When it comes to adding honey to your beauty routine, you have a lot of types to choose from—but some are definitely more effective than others. Here are some of the best options:

Raw honey

The most important factor to consider: How the honey is processed, or in this case, isn’t processed. The best kind of honey for your skin is raw honey, says Hayag. “Raw, unprocessed honey is packed with natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which all help protect

Treat Acne & Other Skin Conditions With Banana Peels!

Adult acne is a nasty thing. Whether you’ve done your time with teenage acne or not, seeing it again during your adult years is not fun – and I’m speaking from personal experience! I’ve tried everything, from pills, to creams, to Proactiv-type products. Nothing worked, at least not for long. Fortunately for me, the problem fixed itself on its own and I now only battle the random breakout here and there.

My younger cousin is now going through the same thing, so for the past few months, I’ve made it my mission to find something that would help her. I didn’t want her to go down the same path as I did with pills, creams, etc. Now that I have this blog, I knew it was my duty to help her find a natural, chemical-free alternative to the steroid-laden pills and creams that are prescribed at the conventional dermatologist’s office.

The steps are very simple for Treat Adult Acne:

  • Take a small piece of banana peel and rub it on the affected area for a few minutes until the inside of the peel turns brown.
  • As it dries, your skin will absorb the vitamins and nutrients in the peel. I leave it on for about 30 mins. and then wash it off with warm water. At night, I just leave it on overnight, then wash off in the morning.
  • Do this 3 times a day, and in a few days, you’ll notice results!

So Why Does This Work?

Banana peels are chock-full of antioxidants, including lutein, which may help protect the skin against sun damage. They also contain esterified fatty acids, which have actually been isolated and incorporated into a patented lotion  used to treat eczema and psoriasis!

Some extra notes and other uses

  • Banana peels can also be used to treat warts as well! Just tape a piece of the peel to cover the wart, leave on overnight, and remove in the morning. Continue with nightly treatments until wart is gone.
  • To stop the itch from bug bites and poison ivy, rub banana peels on the affected area – no more itching!
  • Banana peels may also help with hemorrhoids because of the sugar content, which helps them shrink.
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by rubbing banana peels on your skin, which helps to tighten and tone the skin. Read More……….

Ways To Remove Pimple Marks

Acne is a common skin disease or a skin condition that affects around 9.3% of the world population. Almost all of us are affected by acne at some point in our lifetime.

But there is a difference between acne and pimples. Pimples are one of the symptoms of acne.

What Are Pimples?

Pimples are basically symptoms of acne or we can say that they are a type of acne, that’s results from the clogged pores, which is caused due to the overproduction of sebum. These clogged pores are due to the entrapped dead cells, sebum and bacteria.

In acne, skin involves oil glands at the base of the hair follicle that is the base for many inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin lesions, like pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and pustules.

What Are The Pimple Marks?

Pimple marks are dark spots which can be brown, black or pink or hyperpigmentation resulting from the damage caused to the skin after the inflammation recedes. The damage to the skin due to overexposure to the sun or bursting pimple leads to excess production of melanin during healing, resulting in marks, which we call them pimple marks or acne marks or acne scars.

Causes Of Pimples Marks/Acne:

It occurs when sebaceous/oil glands attached to the hair follicles are stimulated due to hormonal changes or due to puberty. Sebum (oil), a natural substance that lubricates and protects the surface of the skin. Skin cells mature in association with the increased oil production, inducing them to plug the pore of the hair follicle. This plug can appear as a whitehead, and when exposed to the air, it becomes darker and is called a blackhead.

A bump is produced when the plugged hair follicle is enlarged. The enlargement of the follicles may rupture the walls that allow normal skin bacteria and other irritating substances to enter deeper into the skin, ultimately producing inflammation.

Risk Factors:

  • Genetic susceptibility
  • Hormonal changes
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Using oil-based makeup
  • Inadequate water intake
  • Hot and humid climate
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption

How To Remove Pimple Marks Using Home Remedies?

  • Honey And Lemon Juice

Honey is said to have antiseptic for the body and skin. It helps in reducing the pimple marks fasters and also contributes to the body’s healing process. It is one of the best methods to moisturize the skin naturally and it also prevents the production of excess sebum. It also removes the dead skin cells present in the clogged pores.

As we all know, lemon is acidic in nature and possesses antibacterial properties. This property relieves the skin from excess oil and also fights bacteria.

  • Coconut Oil

The high content of lauric acid in coconut helps to kill bacteria, that causes pimples. Coconut oil increases the moisture level of the skin and reduces the pimple marks. It also prevents the skin from producing too much sebum.

How This Olympian Saves Her Skin During Workouts

0

While Queen Quedith Harrison Claye might be best known as an Olympic hurdler and sprinter, she’s also a major beauty enthusiast. Whether she’s posting tutorials on her Instagram, working on launching her own clean cosmetics line, or starring in our new campaign video, Queen isn’t afraid to make a bold statement. We asked her to share a few of her favorites—products, workouts and motivational tips—for the latest in our More Than Skin Deep series.

Her mid-workout beauty pick-me-up:

I’m very much a face mist person, and I really like the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. It’s great prep before I put on my moisturizer and the rest of my skin care routine. I even use it to spritz my face mid-workout—I have one in my track bag. It gives [my skin] this burst of moisture, and I thrive off that.

On becoming a regular sunscreen devotee:

I won’t lie and say that I’ve always used skin care routine. I used to be that person that was like, “I’m a Black woman. We really don’t need sunscreen,” which is a falsity. Sometimes the issue with sunscreens is they’ll leave a white cast on my complexion, but IMAGE Skincare PREVENTION+ Daily Matte Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 32 works very well. It doubles as a moisturizer and sunscreen, so I’m not piling more stuff on my face when I have to work out and sweat. It’s a two-for-one!

In my workout bag I have iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30. It’s easy to pump out the right amount, and I get my face, the tops of my shoulders—even mid-workout. It blends right into my skin and leaves a healthy glow, but not oily. I don’t think anyone likes that feeling of heavy product on their face, especially in the summer heat. This one just dissolves right into the skin.

How she keeps her curls in healthy shape:

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfood Hair Mask has officially gotten to the top of my list. I just ordered it about two weeks ago, and I switch products a lot, but I heard good things about it and it’s become one of my holy grail products. It just seeps into my curls and I’ve noticed they’re a lot more bouncy and defined. Deep conditioner is a staple for me because my hair is always in ponytails, and I put extensions in, and braids. With all these different ways that I manipulate my hair, it’s really important for it to be able to bounce back.

What is Mayonnaise?

Let us start with a brief understanding of what mayonnaise actually is. Well, mayonnaise or mayo is a cold condiment or dressing, which is solid in the form yet viscous in the consistency. It has long been used as a culinary item in sandwiches, hamburgers, Tartar sauce, composed salads, and French fries.

Skin Benefits of Mayonnaise

When it comes to using homemade facial masks, mayonnaise is a sure bet. Following are the reasons for which you should include mayonnaise in your weekly beauty regime:

  • It exfoliates the skin thoroughly by sloughing off dead cells along with dust, dirt, and excess sebum. As a result, the layer of fresh cells underneath is revealed and the skin looks invigorated.

  • Components like egg and soybean oil in mayonnaise also help in tightening the skin and making them look younger by unclogging the pores and nourishing the cells deeply.

Add These Dietician-Recommended Oils To Your Pantry For Healthy Cooking

Healthy Cooking: Is it even monsoon if you’re not craving pakoras and deep-fried snacks? While oily and greasy food is a big no-no when it comes to healthy eating, there are certain oils, which can make your meal unhealthier. Picking right oil for dishes during cooking is important for you and your family’s health.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)

EVOO is high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and a good quality EVOO is extremely flavourful. However, it has a relatively low smoke point, so you may not want to use it for frying or roasting at temperatures above that smoke point. Moreover, cooking a good EVOO will break down its structural integrity which messes with both its flavour and nutrition, so it is ideally used for drizzling and finishing dishes, Healthy Cooking.

Avocado Oil

Much like coconut oil, it is a beloved by the clean-eating community and surrounded by that same health food halo. However, unlike coconut oil, it doesn’t have quite as much saturated fat (only 1.6 grams per tablespoon). It is, however, packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is low in saturated fats, while being high in omega-9 fatty acids. It has a neutral flavour and a rather high smoke point. In fact, at 510˚F, safflower oil has the highest smoke point of all the oils listed. Safflower oil is sold both, chemically processed and cold-pressed like olive oil.

Peanut Oil

Peanut oil is one of the more flavourful oils in this list. It would ideally go with foods that need a nutty or peanut flavour like peanut butter cookies, or sauté stir-fries. It also has a high smoke point so you can even use it to fry.

A Brief About Puffy Eyes

Do your eyes look swollen or puffy? The swollen eyelids are due to the fluid that builds up in the thin layer of the surrounding tissue of the eyes, and the eyelids or the eyes can swell. Pink eyes are also seen in some cases. This swelling is referred to as puffy eyes.

What Are Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes are swelling of the eyes and are also known as periorbital puffiness. It refers to the accumulation of the excess fluid  in the connective tissues throughout the eye, most commonly the eyelids.

Puffy eyes are also known as under-eye bags or bags under eyes. These are called due to the mild puffiness and swelling around the eyes. It is common as you age.

Puffy eyes or under-eye bags are rarely an indication of a major medical condition. Cold compresses at home can reduce the appearance of puffy eyes.

Generally, the eye swelling goes away on its own within a day but if the swelling lasts longer for 24-48 hours, you must visit an eye care professional.

Puffy Under Eyes Causes

Ageing is one of the main causes of the puffiness under the eyes. The skin under the eyes is very thin, which changes as you age. With ageing, the tissue in the eyelids gets weakened and due to this the fat in the upper eyelid can fall, coming to the lower eyelid.

Fluid accumulation is more likely to happen in the lower eyelid as you age. The fluid retention in the looks very prominent in the thin skin around the eyelids. The fluid retention is known as oedema. Oedema causes the eyes to appear puffier especially when you get up in the morning but as you start blinking it puffiness goes away.

Other Reasons That Cause Puffy Eyes

  • Not Enough Sleep

Research study has found that not getting enough sleep is one the reason for the puffy eyes. It is also the reason for dark circles under the eyes, red eyes and droopy eyelids.

The muscles around the eyes get weaker due to lack of sleep. This is also the cause of loss of elastin and collagen tissue under the eyes. This causes the fluid to accumulate and make the area to swell. This under-eye swelling may last for 24 hours because of the little sleep.

The signs will become permanent if you have poor sleep regularly. Seven to nine hours of sleep is a must for adults.

  • Too Much Salt Intake

Intake of too much salt in the diet can make the body retain water. The excess of water causes swelling and puffiness in the face and body. The skin around the eyes is very thin therefore is at higher risk of puffier. This leads to under-eye bags and also dark circles.

To reduce the puffy eyes, you should cut down the salt intake. Packaged and processed foods that have added salts should be avoided. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out the excess sodium.

  • Smoking

Smoking cigars, cigarettes irritates the eyes. You may experience an allergic reaction even if you do not smoke but if you are standing near a person who is smoking. This can make the eyes water triggering under-eye swelling. You should quit smoking if you want to prevent the eye puffiness and other symptoms.

If you are sensitive to leftover smoke particles, always try to clean the surfaces and items at your home. After being around the people who smoke, always wash your clothes and hair.

DIY Man-Friendly Face Masks: Face Masks For Men!

0

These DIY man-friendly face masks are just what the man in your life needs! These face masks for men are tailored to men’s skin which is actually 25% thicker than women’s!

so many ways we continue to learn how different physiologically men and women are. Yay for science! And while there are some obvious differences (ahem) have you ever considered the differences in our skin?!

For example, men’s skin is 25% thicker than women’s because of higher testosterone levels and men produce more facial sebum oil making them more prone to acne later in life when compared to women.

Yet, although men clearly have a lot going for them in the skin department, they do far less to maintain and take care of their skin.

They are less likely to wear sunscreen and definitely less likely to indulge in a moisturizing or pore-clearing face mask. For your brother, father, boyfriend, uncle, etc. share the face mask love with these “manly” face masks using healthy, natural ingredients and essential oils that are known to have more masculine scents to them.

Face Masks For Men

Sandalwood essential oil is astringent, anti-inflammatory, and known for its aromatic calming effect (great for helping him chill out during the face mask soak time). Sandalwood is known for its earthy, woody, sweet scent and used in a number of colognes.

Frankincense essential oil is great for skin and found to protect skin cells, reduce acne, tighten skin and prevent wrinkling. The scent of frankincense is known to be woody and spicy with a slight fruity accent.

Tea tree essential oil is both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory and often used to treat acne and calm redness and swelling of the skin. Also used as a bug repellent, tea tree oil has the scent of camping making it a good match for that outdoorsy guy.

Charcoal Face Mask For Acne & a Clearer Complexion:

You’ll Need:

  • 1 tbsp Activated charcoal – charcoal unclogs pores by binding to dirt and other impurities found on the face and deep in the pores and helps remove them. It will leave complexion clear and fresh.
  • ½ tbsp Bentonite clay– bentonite clay works like charcoal to tighten pores by pulling the oil and dirt out.
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2-3 drops of essential oil of choice

To Make:

First mix the essential oil and water together, then sprinkle the charcoal and bentonite clay over the top continuing to stir until the ingredients are well blended and clay-like.

To Use:

Massage onto face and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water then again with cool water and pat dry. This mask will harden and make it difficult to laugh or talk after about 10 minutes. Add cucumber slices or a glass of champagne for that extra relaxing spa effect!

Yogurt Face Mask for Moisturizing and Exfoliating:

You’ll Need:

  • 1-2 tbsp of yogurt – yogurt is ultra-nourishing and can lighten spots caused by sun exposure while the lactic acid contained in yogurt will help dissolve dead skin cells and tighten pores.
  • 1 tbsp of aloe vera – aloe vera is a moisturizing powerhouse and because men are prone to skipping the SPF, aloe may be the perfect antidote to healing skin after sun exposure.
  • 2-3 drops of essential of choice

To Make:

Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk until well blended. Massage onto the face and neck and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then again with cool water and pat dry. Add cucumber slices and a candle for the whole spa experience! read more

DIY Pina Colada Scrub

This DIY pina colada scrub is super easy to make and can be used on both the face and the body! Silky smooth skin with a hint of the tropics is just minutes away!

No matter where you are in the world, you can be instantly transported to the sunny coastline of the Caribbean with this DIY pina colada scrub. Imagine palm trees swaying in the warm breeze and your feet dipped in the crystal blue waters as you indulge your skin with this easy recipe containing things you probably have in your kitchen already!

Pineapple juice is loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants that make our skin so happy. Applied topically, pineapple juice can help reverse damage caused by sun exposure and free radicals while hydrating, treating acne, and reducing fine lines.

Found in the stem and meat of pineapple is bromelain, an enzyme that helps to firm the skin and improve skin’s elasticity by dissolving dead collagen and forming new, healthy collagen thus preventing wrinkles.

Bananas are full of skin-loving vitamins and minerals like potassium and vitamins A, C, and E all of which aid in moisturizing, repairing damaged skin, fighting the effects of aging, and leaving skin healthy and glowing.

Sugar is a great exfoliator and can help diminish dead skin cells leaving the skin soft and fresh. When using sugar on the face, it is best to use brown over white as it is smaller and gentler. If making a body-only scrub, white sugar is fine to use.

Coconut oil is of course the superstar for moisture and with its antibacterial and antifungal properties helps to ward off any impurities on the skin.

DIY Pina Colada Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of pineapple juice
  • 3 tbsp of coconut oil
  • ½ of a banana (small; if it is a large banana use ¼)
  • 2 tbsp of brown sugar

To Make:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until the mixture is no longer clumpy but a smooth, creamy texture. If you’re making the scrub by hand, first mash the banana with a fork then add in the remaining ingredients and stir until well blended and a smooth texture.

To Use:

After washing the face and body and while the skin is still wet, apply the pina colada scrub and gently massage. Allow the scrub to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with warm to cool water. Use once or twice a week.

Because this recipe uses all-natural ingredients and there are no preservatives, it will not keep well. The scrub can be kept in the fridge for a day or two, but no more than that. Try to make a small batch at a time – this way it’s always guaranteed to be fresh! Read more
