Clementine

The App Store named us ‘App of the Day’ in the UK, and ‘Apps We Love’ in the US. We’ve been featured in the Telegraph, Stylist, Forbes. I’m Kim Palmer, Founder of Clementine and recently voted ‘top 100 women in fem tech and health tech.’ A few years ago I was feeling bad. My anxiety had sky rocketed and I wasn’t coping. Work presentations were becoming unbearable, even meetings were difficult. Meanwhile I had a young son to look after. I needed to make some changes. I was introduced to internationally renowned hypnotherapist Georgia Foster, whose soothing voice, positivity and practical tools completely changed my life. Things started to look up. I then realised I could help other women who felt like me; overwhelmed by the daily grind.

And so I started developing Clementine: an app by women, for women who want to radiate confidence but are struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem or just feeling overwhelmed by life’s stresses.

Clementine in not a spiritual, hippie app – it’s for the modern woman. And it works. It will help you to sleep better, feel calmer and be your best self. It includes a range of hypnotherapy sessions, as well as the option for daily mantras to pop up on your phone, giving you an instant boost. It’s like pocket therapy.

We were named one of the ‘seven apps every woman should own’ by the Guardian. The App Store named us ‘App of the Day’ in the UK, and ‘Apps We Love’ in the US. We’ve been featured in the Telegraph, Stylist, Forbes and on multiple influential blogs. Off the back of it, Kim won the Women of Tomorrow Awards.

Pro Polish Microdermabrasion Device

Lancer Skincare, the premier Los Angeles-based international skincare brand founded by Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Harold Lancer, proudly announces the launch of its very first skincare exfoliating device, Pro Polish Microdermabrasion Device, currently exclusively available through QVC. The introduction of Pro Polish Microdermabrasion Device builds on Dr. Harold Lancer’s 30 years of innovation, research and practice in dermatology and marks an expansion into a new beauty category for Lancer Skincare. Pro Polish enhances the efficacy of the Lancer routine by delivering surface-layer microdermabrasion in a patented, handheld device. An extension of the exfoliation-first philosophy that defines the Lancer Anti-Aging Method, Pro Polish is the latest introduction in a line of innovations by the brand.

Pro Polish combines diamond-encrusted exfoliating tips, gentle vacuum suctioning and a 180-degree swivel head to revitalize overall skin tone and texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles across the face and body. The diamond-encrusted tips are designed to exfoliate dead surface layer skin cells, then gently suction them away to reveal the look of brighter, smoother, and softer skin, while the swivel head provides better access for the full body and hard to reach areas. Featuring three vacuum speeds, Pro Polish was designed for all skin types and provides visible results.

“The expansion into the skincare device category marks an important milestone for the brand driven by our core philosophy of ‘Practice to Product’,” says Tracey Sameyah, CEO of Lancer Skincare. “The launch of Pro Polish is an example of our ongoing goal to offer consumers the opportunity to experience the benefits of the practice in the privacy of their homes. We were thrilled to align the debut of this device with an exclusive launch on QVC, supported by our brand ambassador and friend of the practice Candace Cameron Bure. Our launch was met with unprecedented success and we look forward to a global roll out in 2021.” Read more

Smartphone App And Deep Learning Help Detect Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the world’s top causes of disease and death, affecting more than 450 million people worldwide. While technology has come a long way in helping to detect and manage diabetes, it still typically involves blood draws and clinical tools. Moreover, around half of all people with diabetes aren’t even aware that they have the disease.

Researchers at UC San Francisco have now come up with a promising method of detecting diabetes using a smartphone camera and some deep learning, utilizing the publicly available Instant Heart Rate app from Azumio to capture photoplethysmography (PPG) measurements. When a user places his or her fingertip over the phone’s flashlight and camera, the app measures PPG’s by capturing color changes in the fingertip corresponding to each heartbeat. This data is reported back to the user as the instantaneous heart rate.

While heart rate measurement might be an impressive use of a smartphone in itself, the UCSF researchers found that the heart rate data, along with heart rate variability and certain features of the PPG waveform morphology, correlate with many physiological mechanisms affected by diabetes, such as endothelial aging and microvascular atherosclerosis. Swoop Portable MRI Cleared in U.S. for Bedside Scans

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become an integral part of medical care throughout much of the world, but access to this technology remains limited. Conventional MRI scanners need dedicated rooms with entry protocols, quench venting, and safety measures, and patients have to be taken to where the machine is located, often at a distant corner of a hospital. Earlier this year, Hyperfine, a company with offices in New York City and St Guilford, Connecticut, won the first FDA clearance for a portable MRI that can be taken into patient rooms. Now, the company has obtained FDA clearance for its second generation portable MRI device, called the Swoop.

As with the original, the Swoop wheels right to the point of care and plugs into a standard three-prong wall outlet. It’s operated through a tablet that’s wirelessly connected to the MRI machine.

The scanner will probably find most use imaging the brain, including for stroke assessment and headaches, but also potentially for imaging peripheral joints and limbs.

Unlike the previous system, the Swoop is indicated for all age groups and has a number of software and usability improvements. According to Hyperfine, the company’s new MRI “costs less than the annual service contract alone for most current MRI systems, and it consumes 35 times less power than those same systems.”

“Six years ago, we had a crazy vision to create a new product category for imaging: an affordable point-of-care MRI system. With this clearance from the FDA, we are launching an astonishing new diagnostic tool for patients and providers in our Swoop™ Portable MRI, and we are delivering on our mission to democratize healthcare across clinical settings and geographies,” said Jonathan Rothberg, PhD, founder and chairman of Hyperfine Research, in a press release. Wearable Sweat Sensor Made from Microbial Nanocellulose

Researchers in Brazil have developed a wearable sweat sensor made from microbial nanocellulose. The natural polymer provides a breathable interface with the underlying skin and allows sweat to travel through for electrochemical analysis using printed electrodes. The system can measure a wide variety of metabolites and biomarkers present in sweat, and could be useful for monitoring conditions such as diabetes.

Wearable sensors are developing apace, and hold significant promise in monitoring various biomarkers. However, developing materials that interface well with the skin is a challenge, with many sensors, including plastic-based films, causing sweat to build up underneath, hindering measurements and causing irritation. These researchers set out to develop a sensor that would allow the underlying skin to breathe, and used a natural polymer to achieve this.

“Microbial nanocellulose is a 100% natural polymer. It is produced by bacteria from sugar. Its main advantage over plastic is its far better interface with human skin,” said Robson Rosa da Silva, a researcher involved in the study. “It’s been commercially available for some years for use in wound dressings, among other applications, but it had never before been studied as an electrochemical sensor substrate. Nanocellulose is totally breathable, enabling sweat to reach the electrode’s active layer.” Read more

LG Air Purifier Mask Makes Breathing Easy

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, companies around the world have been working on solutions to improve how the world responds to the crisis. LG, the giant South Korean electronics manufacturer, has just announced that it has developed a face mask that is an air purifier that cleans the air and makes it easy to breathe at the same time.

The LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier features two replaceable H13 HEPA filters that the firm already employs in its house air purifiers. Two built-in fans push air through, coordinated with the wearer’s breathing thanks to a sensor that detects respiratory activity in real time. Both the rhythm and air volume are measured, similar to those in positive air pressure devices that are used to help with sleep apnea. The air moved by the fans is continuously adjusted to compensate and make it feel more like you’re not wearing a mask.

The fans, sensors, and electronics are powered by a 820 mAh battery that can keep the mask going for eight hours in low mode and two hours on max. The device comes with a charging case that has UV-C LEDs inside to kill any germs that land on the mask’s exterior while it was in use. Read more…
