What Is LED Light Therapy, and Is It Safe for the Skin?

When we imagine a beauty routine, chances are, the phrase conjures thoughts of cleanser, retinol, sunscreen, and maybe a serum or two. But thanks to an area of the beauty world I like to think of as “gadgetry,” everyday routines are expanding to include high-tech treatments that were previously only available in a professional’s office. This category includes at-home laser hair removal, personal microcurrent treatments, and, increasingly, at-home LED light therapy.

Although these devices can have a slight Westworld feel, companies like tried-and-true Neutrogena and device specialists like Dr. Dennis Gross have come out with light therapy tools that claim various skin benefits. But does at-home light therapy really work? And what does it do, anyway? Before you get started on your RoboCop impression, we asked board-certified dermatologists to break down exactly what you need to know about light therapy.

Why am I putting this light on my skin?

“Without a doubt, visible light can have powerful effects on the skin, especially in high-energy forms, such as in lasers and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices,” says Daniel Belkin, a board-certified dermatologist at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York. LED (light-emitting diode) is a “lower energy form,” in which the light is absorbed by the molecules in the skin, which in turn “alters the biologic activity or the activity of nearby cells.”

In skin-care terms, that means altering the skin cells in order to produce a variety of agreeable outcomes, depending on the color of the light in question. “There is encouraging evidence that blue LED light can alter the microbiome of the skin to improve acne, that red LED light can stimulate collagen synthesis, and that yellow LED light can reduce redness and healing time,” says Belkin. Colon Explorer for Automatic Imaging and Biopsying of Polyps

Millions of colonoscopies are performed every year to spot cancer as early as possible. The routine nature of these procedures and the constant need for them to be performed has led researchers at University of Colorado Boulder to develop a robotic tank-like device for traversing, imaging, and even biopsying the colon and maybe even much of the rest of the GI tract.

There are ingestable electronic pills that can take pictures of the gut as they travel from one end of the digestive system to the other. However, these are fairly limited devices and can’t pause to look over a suspect lesion, move to change their point of view, or take a biopsy.

The new device out of CU Boulder, called Endoculus, has four sets of tank-like treads that let the robot move along the slippery and rugged three-dimensional nature of the colon. An air pump is used to inflate the colon and a water pump to clean the scene. LED lights on the front illuminate the interior and an on-board biopsy snare allows the device to take samples of polyps…Read more

Remote Control of Ventilators for COVID Patients Protects Clinicians from Infection

When dealing with patients infected by a contagious disease and that are suffering from acute respiratory distress, protecting clinicians is critically important. However, much of the bedside equipment that interfaces with patients in the intensive care unit has to be directly controlled, putting staff in close proximity with those infected. Now, a team at Johns Hopkins has developed a system that allows just about any device with a touch screen to be remotely operated.

The new approach very much resembles a computerized engraver, or any similar tool with two orthogonal pairs of rails that move a stylus over a flat surface. In this case, the stylus is essentially a finger that presses on the touchscreen. The operator is located at a distance from the machine and uses a computer to tell the robotic system where on the screen to push on the remote device.

The remote controller is already being trialed on ventilators that are treating COVID patients, which allows clinicians to perform quick adjustments outside the patient room without having to gear up with PPE. “This remote-control system will be a force multiplier for our frontline clinicians,” said Jonathan Cope, a respiratory therapist at Johns Hopkins. “Being able to save time to deliver more care to more patients will pay huge dividends when we face massive patient surges during pandemics.”…Read more

Smartphones Monitor Users’ Movements to Detect Alcohol Intoxication

According to a new study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, your smartphone can tell you if you’re drunk. While this may seem like common sense to those who have witnessed the unsteady walk and unsavory speech from a friend who likely had a few too many drinks, a smartphone could be a proactive, real-time tool to complement a breathalyzer, help prevent drunk driving, and even reduce alcohol consumption for those trying to come clean.

The premise is simple: in the same way that our smartphones use an accelerometer to help track our steps by monitoring our walking movements, this motion sensor could likewise help in predicting intoxication by monitoring one’s gait. To test the hypothesis, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine had 22 adults subject their bodies to the painful task of consuming a mixed vodka drink until their breath alcohol concentration measured 0.20 percent. Over seven hours, the subjects had their breath alcohol concentration analyzed and they also performed a walking task while carrying a smartphone on their lower back…Read more

Fitbit takes on Apple with new smartwatch

Fitbit’s new, $330 smartwatch has a slew of new features, including a wrist-based temperature sensor and a sensor to monitor stress.

In its newest competitor to the Apple Watch, Fitbit rolled out a $330 smartwatch with a few new tricks. The company’s Fitbit Sense smartwatch has new sensors to track stress levels and skin temperature, as well as a new ECG app that is pending FDA clearance.

Fitbit has emphasized health features in its devices since it first began integrating heart rate monitoring into its devices. Its newest smartwatch goes a step further with features to track stress, including an ectodermal activity sensor, which effectively picks up on sweaty palms by measuring changes in the skin’s conductance.

Fitbit also said it provides a stress management score, based on a user’s heart rate, sleep and activity data.

“We are breaking new ground with our wearables, helping you better understand and manage your stress and heart health, and pulling your key health metrics together in a simple and digestible way to track things like skin temperature, heart rate variability, and SpO2 so you can see how it’s all connected,” Fitbit CEO James Park said in a news release.
