What to Know About Dermaplaning, the Exfoliation Treatment Instagram Is Obsessed With

You can’t scroll through Instagram without seeing a post about dermaplaning, the latest way people are exfoliating their faces. Indeed, there are more than 1.2 million Insta posts tagged #dermaplaning, ranging from videos of the procedure to before and after photos.

But what exactly is dermaplaning? In short, it’s a procedure where a dermatologist or licensed aesthetician uses a blade to scrape dead skin off your face—and yes, it’s oddly satisfying to watch (check out the video below).

Proponents swear that—just like other forms of exfoliation—sloughing off dead skin cells makes their skin glow, unclogs pores, and fends off peach fuzz. But does the treatment actually work? Here, experts clear up all of your dermaplaning questions, including whether or not you should try it.

Dermaplaning is a short, in-office or spa procedure that’s kind of like getting your face shaved. It’s meant to exfoliate your skin and remove small, fine baby hairs (a.k.a. vellus hairs), so your face glows and feels softer.

“Dermaplaning uses a sharp No. 10 surgical blade [a larger, fatter surgical blade] held at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape the outer layer of the skin which consists of dull dead skin cells,” explains Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist and founder of Entière Dermatology.

At the appointment, a doctor or aesthetician will gently pull your skin tightly and lightly glide the blade in an upward motion using delicate, feathering strokes, explains Alix J. Charles, M.D., a dermatologist based in Hinsdale, IL.

A dermaplaning treatment usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and can be done as a stand-alone option or as a part of a facial.

First, your skin will feel seriously smooth and look super even thanks to a solid exfoliation, says Dr. Levin. Still, this treatment isn’t exactly a wonder cure for your skin. While some experts are curious about whether or not dermaplaning could improve how well creams and serums are absorbed into the skin (which should, in turn, boost their benefits), its effect on product absorption isn’t 100% clear, says Dr. Levin.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been jolted only to realize the rumble that shook me out of my dream was simply my husband, John, snoring less than a foot away.

Suddenly, those ads for over-the-counter snoring gadgets began to look pretty promising.

So, after a particularly noisy night, we recently looked at some of the top options on Amazon and decided to give three different devices a try.

What is it?

Anti Snore Chin Strap

It’s a simple neoprene strap that fits under the chin. It wraps around the sides of the head, and fastens with adjustable Velcro straps at the back.

The purpose of the strap is to hold the wearer’s mouth closed as they sleep in order to keep open-mouth snoring from occurring throughout the night.

2 in 1: Anti Snoring & Air Purifier

Made of plastic and medical-grade silicone, this anti-snoring gadget comes in a reusable case. This is supposed to fit snugly in the wearer’s nostrils.

The packaging claims the front “snore reduction vents have been scientifically designed to maximize airflow through the nasal passage ways”. The silicone prongs that are inserted into the wearer’s nose “comfortably fit different size of nasal passages.”

Breathe Right Nasal Strips

These clear plastic adhesive strips are worn over the bridge of the nose and have “spring-like” bands that lift the nasal passages, supposedly opening them wider to improve airflow.

Each strip is individually packaged and has a peel-away backing for easy application over the nose.

What Is Lash Lift?

A lash lift, also known as a lash perm, is a process of curling the lashes with a chemical solution so they stay in a curled position. You know how a perm is created on hair on one’s head? The concept is very similar with the lash lift process.

Instead of curling the lashes around the barrel to create a spiral shape, the lashes are just positioned upwards against a silicone pad. Solution is applied and in about 30 minutes or so the process is complete. The full process from start to finish typically takes an hour. It’s important that the technician pays very close attention to how the lashes are positioned on the silicone pad as the shape they are glued in is the shape they will take with the perm solution.

So, why would someone do this? 

For me, it was a total game changer in how quickly I could apply my eye makeup and it gave me the look I want with my lashes. My natural lashes are thin, stick straight and don’t hold a curl. I had to heat up a lash curler with my blow dryer to really make my lashes hold the curl. The lash lift gives me curled, opened up lashes that make it very easy to swipe mascara onto. They never fall or lose their curl after the lift.

How long does the lift last? 

Typically it lasts about 6-8 weeks. Everyone’s lashes go through a natural shedding process. Usually about 2 months after the lift I can see that my new lashes are straight and older ones are curled. It is permanent in that once you do the lift you cannot undo it. Once your lashes are grown out it will no longer provide any curl, just like when permed hair grows out straight.

How do I know if I have facial eczema?

Believe it or not, one of the most frustrating aspects of facial eczema is figuring out whether you actually have eczema. Your dry or irritated skin could be the result of a bad reaction to a product you’re using, harsh weather, and other common factors that can impact skin health.

It can be difficult to distinguish the two as skin affected by eczema is dry and irritated, [but] generally, dry skin is not irritated and itchy to the level of eczema and will readily respond to moisturizers, gentle skin care, and bringing humidity back to the environment,” explains Sejal Shah, a New York City-based dermatologist.
