If you suffer from high blood pressure, knowing emergency treatments can be a lifesaver, being the first step to consider before going to the hospital. It is essential to always look for medical assistance to investigate if it is the case of a more serious procedure.
First, it is crucial to understand that high blood pressure (hypertension) is a dangerous condition that impacts nearly half of adults in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), causing millions of deaths in 2018.
It occurs because the force of blood pressing against artery walls is consistently too high. It requires a long-term care approach, but in the case of emergencies, there are some ways to temporarily lower your blood pressure in just a matter of minutes.
- Take a warm bath or shower. Being in the water for at least 15 minutes and enjoying the warm water can help with hypertension and reduce muscle tension.
- Do a breathing exercise. Take a deep breath from your core, hold your breath for about two seconds, and then slowly exhale. Pause for a few moments and repeat.
- As stress is a key contributor to high blood pressure, relaxing can be the way to reduce cases of crises. This may be as simple as sitting in a quiet room for a few moments, doing a few stretching exercises, reading a good book, or meditating.
These techniques can provide a quick fix, but it’s important to have a professional accompaniment to manage your high blood pressure successfully.
