Dental implants are done by a surgery that replaces tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts and replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function like real ones. It is a very important tooth care procedure that offers an alternative to dentures or bridgework that doesn’t fit well. Furthermore, it is also an option when a lack of natural tooth roots doesn’t allow building dentures or bridgework tooth replacements.
The surgery may involve several procedures, including damaged tooth removal, jawbone preparation (when needed), dental implant placement, bone growth and healing, abutment placement, and artificial tooth placement. On the bright side, problems are rare while getting implants, and when they occur, they’re usually minor and easily treated.
The entire process can take many months from start to finish. This happens because much of that time is devoted to healing and waiting for the growth of new bone in the jaw, which is a process that cannot be rushed.
After the gums are healed, the patient and the dental specialist can choose artificial teeth that are removable, fixed, or a combination of both. The pros of removable teeth are that they can be easily removed for repair or daily cleaning. On the other hand, fixed implants are exceptionally strong, and several teeth can be replaced by one implant if they’re bridged together.
In conclusion, in all cases, the major benefit of implants is solid support for your new teeth, and most dental implants are successful. When proper tooth care is taken after the procedure, it can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life and health.
