The Colorful Makeup Trend That Will Surely Catch Your Eye

0

Today we’re going to talk about how to fix blotchy skin! First, it’s essential to prep your skin. Makeup will only lay as smooth as the skin beneath it. There are a myriad of skin-smoothing products on the market, including at-home peels, that’ll smooth away rough patches, exposing the smooth skin underneath. The Colorful Makeup Trend

How to Cover up Blotchy Skin

When you’re shopping for foundation, choose a product based on your skin type. If you have dry skin try a moisturizing formula, and if you have oily skin, use a water-based formula.

Don’t just consider your foundation‘s texture and consistency. Also look for what’s called color saturation. When you’re covering a trouble spot, you need more pigment in your foundation because it’s the pigment that smooths out over the discolored skin and blends the spot away. That usually means you’ll have to pay more money. Higher-end products tend to contain higher levels of pigment. The Colorful Makeup Trend

Don’t put on too much product and do take your time applying it. When you add too much product to your face, that in itself creates thickness and an unnatural-looking finish. Start with less than you might be accustomed to. Apply it evenly and let it sit for 20 seconds or so. Then, if you haven’t achieved the amount of coverage you’re looking for, apply more product carefully and lightly over it. Read more

Dermatologist offers five tips to use petroleum jelly for skin care

The skin is the body’s largest organ, so it’s important to take good care of it. However, doing so doesn’t necessarily mean breaking the bank, say dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology. In fact, petroleum jelly, a common, inexpensive product found in most people’s medicine cabinets, can have multiple skin care uses for the entire family.

“When it comes to skin care, expensive isn’t always better,” said board-certified dermatologist Rebecca Baxt, MD, FAAD, who maintains a private practice in Paramus, N.J., and New York. “Petroleum jelly, which can be found in just about anyone’s local drugstore, is great for moisturizing rough, cracked feet, elbows and hands, and protecting kids’ scrapes and bumps.”

To save on skin care, Dr. Baxt recommends using petroleum jelly to:

  1. Relieve dry skin, including lips and eyelids: Dry skin can flake, itch, crack and even bleed. Since ointments are more effective and less irritating than lotions, consider applying petroleum jelly to dry skin, including your lips and eyelids. The skin on your eyelids is the thinnest skin on the body and can get irritated easily. If your eyelids get dry and flaky, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly for moisture and protection. For the best results, always apply petroleum jelly when your skin is damp.
  2. Help injured skin heal: For minor wounds such as cuts, scrapes and scratches, use petroleum jelly to keep the wound moist. This helps prevent the wound from drying out and forming a scab, as scabs take longer to heal. This will also help prevent a scar from getting too large, deep or itchy. As long as the wound is cleaned daily, it is not necessary to use antibacterial ointments.
  3. Prevent chafing: Chafing is a painful skin irritation that occurs when body parts rub together or rub against clothing. To prevent chafing that can lead to blisters, apply petroleum jelly to problem areas, such as the feet or thighs.
  4. Treat diaper rash: The best way to prevent diaper rash is to keep your baby’s skin as dry and clean as possible. However, if your baby does get a rash, apply petroleum jelly during each diaper change. With the right care, your baby’s rash should clear in about three to four days. If the rash doesn’t go away, see a board-certified dermatologist.
  5. Rehydrate nails: If you frequently get manicures and pedicures, apply petroleum jelly to your nails and cuticles in between polishes. This will minimize brittleness and help prevent your nails from chipping. For the best results, apply it when your nails are damp. Read more

Tips to help control oily skin

Although oily skin can clog pores and lead to increased acne breakouts, dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology say oily skin also has many benefits. Oil helps preserve the skin, and people with oily skin tend to have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles. The key, say dermatologists, is to strike a balance between having too much oil and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture.

“There are many reasons for oily skin, including stress, humidity, genetics and fluctuating hormones,” said board-certified dermatologist Deirdre Hooper, MD, FAAD, who maintains a private practice in New Orleans. “These factors can make oily skin difficult to manage; however, there are several things you can do at home to reduce the oil.”

To help control oily skin, Dr. Hooper recommends the following tips:

  1. DO wash your face every morning and evening, and after exercise. While washing, resist the temptation to scrub your skin -; even to remove makeup. Scrubbing irritates your skin, which can make it look worse.
  2. DO choose skin care products that are labeled “oil-free” and “noncomedogenic.” Products that have these labels -; including cleansers, moisturizers and makeup -; won’t clog your pores or cause acne.
  3. DO use a gentle, foaming face wash. Many people with oily skin believe that they need to use a strong face wash in order to dry out their skin. However, using a face wash that is too harsh can irritate your skin and trigger increased oil production. Instead, look for a mild, gentle face wash.
  4. DON’T use oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers. These can irritate your skin.
  5. DO apply moisturizer daily. Although you have oily skin, it is still important to apply moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. To save time and protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, look for a moisturizer that also contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  6. DO wear sunscreen outdoors. Sunscreen helps prevent sun damage that could lead to wrinkles, age spots and even skin cancer. To prevent acne breakouts, look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and do not use sunscreens that contain fragrance or oils.
  7. DO choose oil-free, water-based makeup.
  8. DON’T sleep in your makeup. Always remove all makeup before going to sleep.
  9. DO use blotting papers throughout the day. Gently press the paper against your face and leave it on for a few seconds to absorb the oil. Don’t rub the paper on your face, as this will spread the oil to other areas.
  10. DON’T touch your face throughout the day. Although it’s tempting to touch your face, doing so can spread dirt, oil and bacteria from your hands to your face. Only touch your face when you’re cleansing, moisturizing or applying sunscreen or makeup, and make sure your hands are clean first. Read more

How to Make Your Own Lush Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask

If you’re a big fan of Lush Cosmetics, then this is definitely for you! If you don’t know much about Lush Cosmetics here’s a little crash course. It’s a cosmetics company that handmakes all-natural, vegan products for skin, hair and hair. On every single product, you’ll be able to read every single ingredient AND understand it, you’ll see who made the product (also comes with a little cartoon picture of the person), and you’ll also see when it was made. It goes without saying that this is one of the best cosmetics companies out there. Warrior Face Mask

But of course, it IS a little pricey as you can imagine. Sure, their stuff smells amazing and there’s no better feeling than walking out of a Lush store with some loot, but that’s not always possible!

So, instead of buying it, why not make our own? Today we’ll show you how to make your own Lush Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask. It’s easy, the ingredients are not hard to find, and best of all – SO.MUCH.CHEAPER. So let’s get started!

How to Make Your Own Lush Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask

First, let’s look at the original ingredients in the Lush Cosmetic Warrior Face Mask:

Kaolin, Fresh Green Grapes (Vitis vinifera), Fresh Free Range Eggs, Honey, Cornflour (Zea mays), Glycerin, Fresh Garlic (Allium sativum), Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia), Perfume.

As you can see, it’s all natural stuff that you can actually pronounce and that you’ve heard of before.

This fresh face mask will leave your skin feeling and looking fresher than ever! Great for oily and acne prone skin, as well as sensitive and combination skin, this Lush face mask is truly one for the books!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

This homemade recipe will yield about 4-5 uses.

  • 10-12 grapes
  • 3 tsps Multani Mitti or Fuller’s Earth. Since kaolin clay is not easily available, Fuller’s Earth does the exact same thing.
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 tsp glycerin
  • 2 tsps cornflour
  • 1 tsp honey

As you can see, you might already have most of the ingredients in your home, except of course for the clay and the glycerin. In any case, you should be able to easily find both of these (especially glycerin), at a health food store, drug store, or of course, the easiest option: online. You can find Fuller’s Earth Clay on Amazon and glycerin on Amazon as well.  Ok so let’s get to it and make this mask!

Directions:

In a bowl, add the grapes and garlic. Use a hand blender to mash them up. Add the glycerin and blend again. Add the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and blend well again. You can always add a drop or two of essential oil such as tea tree oil, lavender, or mint. The choice is up to you!

Tea tree oil is great for those with acne-prone and oily skin.

Lavender essential oil is great for those with sensitive skin as it calms redness and irritation.

Mint essential oil is great for combination skin and will also leave skin glowing!

Apply the mask directly onto your face and neck and let dry for about 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Follow up with a moisturizer. You’ll want to use this mask once a week only. You can make a fresh batch every time, or do like I did and make enough for a few uses. Just make sure to store the mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Why This Mask Is Good For You:

This is a miracle mask, especially for acne-prone and oily skin. Its got great detoxifying benefits, getting rid of all the gunk and toxins that reside in your skin.

The eggs act as a tightening and softening agent, while the garlic fights acne. Eggs naturally tighten the skin, which is a great ingredient for those with fine lines and crows feet.

The honey, while soothing irritated or sensitive skin, also removes bacteria. It’s a natural antiseptic and anti-fungal ingredient that prevents breakouts from forming.

The clay is an all-around beauty must-have as it makes your skin amazingly radiant. And of course, grapes are known to contain the anti-aging reservatrol which reduces fine lines and wrinkles and prevents them from happening. Read more

If You Shave or Wax Your Body Hair, You Must Know These Important Facts

We are women, and predominantly, have dark hair. We thus tend to shave/wax more than people with lighter hair. If you do not see the need to, that’s a completely individual choice. But you can refer this fact-sheet to a friend who would rather get rid of the fuzz than sport it.

Thus begins the rigmarole of threading, plucking, waxing, shaving, laser hair reduction, over and over again. We can choose not to if we want, but if you are one to love no-fuzz and resort to shaving or waxing, here are some important things you should know. They are critical for your skin’s health.

Shaving – Lowdown

“Don’t shave, wax…your hair growth reduces and your legs will be smoother longer.” You’ve heard this before and we know it. Do you think this is true? Let’s look at some myths and facts we know all too well and get down to busting or affirming them, shall we?

1. Hair Grows Back Thicker, Denser and Pokier!

Incorrect. Shaving does not make your hair grow back thicker and faster. Your hormones and genetics are the only things that control this. But you can swear by it! Well, this is what actually happens. When you shave, your hair gets cut on the surface and not in the natural way a hair strand narrows at the tip. This makes it appear thicker and pokey.

2. Dry Shaving is A-Okay

Not recommended. Remember, a blade is running over your delicate skin layer. Water helps the razor blade glide smoothly over your skin. In fact, we’d recommend using conditioner to soften hair before you shave it.

3. Shaving Every Day Is Bad For Your Skin

Actually, shaving everyday removes dead skin cells and makes your skin smoother. If you have faster hair growth, it is completely okay to shave every day. Some of us prefer to let our hair grow out a little and that is okay too.

4. It Is Okay To Share a Razor

Bet you thought we were okay to say its okay. It is not. The obvious reason is that it isn’t hygienic at all. Secondly, someone else’s razor may not be best for your skin or vice versa. This is true especially if you are sharing with your husband, as men’s razors have blades designed for men’s facial hair.

5. New Razor Blades Cut More

Actually, old blades that are blunt tend to cause more nicks and cuts because we tend to press them down harder on our skin. Either way, be careful to only glide the blade smoothly over your skin. Putting excess pressure on the razor can also cause cuts.

3 Homemade toners to use that manage oily skin

Some of the most common problems any person with oily skin faces is breakouts, pimples, acne and blackheads due to a large amount of oil secretion. During the monsoon season, humidity levels are at a peak, which is a bigger problem for those with oily skin. The solution to managing oily skin and ensuring it remains manageable, even during the monsoon season, is using a toner.

Homemade toners help in keeping the sebum levels of the skin in check. And what better than natural ingredients, for the skin?

Baking Soda and Lemon Face Mask

0

To get rid of blackheads, whiteheads, dark spots, and pimples, this baking soda and lemon face mask is your go-to! The baking soda acts almost like a chemical peel, but is much less abrasive, while the lemon gets rid of scars, discoloration, and dark spots. Use this mask once a week for clear, smooth, and younger-looking skin.

This baking soda and lemon face mask is one of our favorite home remedies because it’s so incredibly easy to make and it actually works!

Homemade Baking Soda and Lemon Face Mask

Before making this mask, please note that if you have very sensitive skin, you may want to do a patch test first as both baking soda and lemon can be pretty tough on the skin.

You’ll Need:

  • 1 tsp freshly squeezed (preferably organic) lemon juice
  • 2 tsp baking soda

Why This Mask Works:

Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent, which means it will help get rid of dark spots, acne scars, age spots, and skin spots. Additionally, lemon juice also helps to balance the pH level in the skin, making it less oily.

Baking soda is a natural exfoliant. It will help get rid of dead skin cells which prevent the formation of excess oil and breakouts. Baking soda also lightens dark spots and acne scars and gets rid of blackheads and whiteheads.

The Drill:

In a small bowl, mix the lemon juice and the baking soda until it forms a runny paste. You will notice that it fizzes, and that is the lemon juice reacting with the baking soda. Apply the mask all over your face and neck, making sure to avoid the eyes. Rub the mask in slow, circular motions around the T-zone. Let the mask sit for 15 minutes (no more). When time is up, wet a washcloth with warm water and place it over your face, leaving it there for a few seconds. Then, use the facecloth to remove the mask, and rinse off with cold water. Follow up with a moisturizer.

Alternative Uses:

Spot Treatment:

You can also use this mask as a spot treatment. Simply dip a cotton pad into the mixture and apply directly to affected areas, such as pimples or acne scars. Let sit for at least 10 minutes and rinse off. Pat dry and follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

Facial Scrub

Alternatively, you can also use this as a quick scrub to rid the skin of dirt, impurities, and blackheads. Make the paste and slowly and gently massage into wet skin in slow, circular motions. Leave on for 1-2 minutes and rinse off with warm water. You’ll notice skin will immediately feel smoother and cleaner.

Substitutions:

If you have very sensitive or dry skin, we recommend using lemon juice. Instead, substitute it for water. It will be much gentler on the skin, and will still work just as well to cleanse, exfoliate, and get rid of blackheads. Read more

10 Types of Face Masks and How to Find The Perfect One

0

Charcoal masks, gold masks, glitter masks, face masks have been around so long that they are taking on newer forms everyday. Before going ahead and picking out fancy face masks, it is best to understand which one is for you. Let’s break them down, shall we?

Who doesn’t love a pampering session? Especially if it draws out impurities and leaves your skin feel super-soft and radiant. Facial masks hydrate your skin, remove dead skin, tone your face and remove any tanning the sun may have caused.
What is important while picking out a face mask is finding the right type for your skin.

Types of Face Masks and What They Do

1. Cream Face Masks

Perfect for: People with dry to normal skin.

Cream masks are heavily moisturising and mostly have an oil base. They will usually contain hyaluronic acid which will moisturize dry skin cells, making them plump by retaining the moisture. If you have dry skin, look for a cream face mask containing hyaluronic acid. Some of the newer cream masks containing algae extracts help to tighten and firm the skin.

2. Sheet Masks

Perfect for: There’s one for every skin type

Sheet masks have taken over the world, especially the social media world with most bloggers donning these. It is recommended that you do not rinse the residue of the sheet masks after use, instead seal in the liquid with a good moisturizer.

3. Clay Masks

Perfect for: Normal to Oily Skin

Clay masks are occlusive, just like sheet masks. This basically means they close the skin off to air. This makes your brain naturally send skin plumpers to the skin that is covered. At the same time, the ingredients in the mask, detox and nourish the skin. If you have acne, look for a clay mask that mentions clarifying ingredients or sulfur to treat your breakouts and prevent redness.

4. Peel-off Masks

Perfect for: Mature skin

Remember your mum using these as a kid and you’d love to peel them off for her? Peel-off masks come in paraffin wax, gel or plastic bases. The tighten the skin temporarily and also stimulate blood circulation. Certain peel-off masks also claim to remove blackheads, like the new charcoal mask.

5. Gel Masks

Perfect for: Sensitive and dry skin

Gel masks have a cooling effect that makes them perfect for sensitive or easily inflammed skin. Gel masks contain an infusion of antioxidants and collagen that help skin recover quickly. They are also great for rehydrating parched skin.

6. Exfoliating Face Masks

Perfect for: All skin types except sensitive skin

Exfoliating masks give your skin shine by ridding it of dead skin cells. They also purge your skin of oil and grime that is deep in your pores. Exfoliating masks that contain fruit enzymes from papaya and pineapple get this done best. Hydroxy acids like glycolic acid and lactic acids also helps it removing deep-seated dirt. Exfoliating masks dry out your skin so be sure to drink plenty of water and moisturize after use. The exfoliating action of these masks allows your skin to be in the best position to absorb nutrients so this is the best time to feed your skin with a soothing, nourishing face pack.
