The beauty industry is rife with over the top claims about “miracle” skincare products and services, but one too-good-to-be-true innovation I can confidently get behind is the microcurrent facial. It involves using a low-grade electrical current to “train” your facial muscles to appear more lifted, tightened, and firm. In fact, its nickname is the “non-invasive facelift.”
Microcurrent facials are like a gym workout for your face.
“The muscles on the face start going south, just like everything else. We have to keep it fit. So, we use current to stimulate the muscle, starting low then increasing gradually until you have the firmness you would like,” Rodriguez explains. While Rodriguez says having a microcurrent facial once a month is sufficient, she adds that clients of hers at Carillon—the wellness resort is also residential—come weekly.
She adds that a microcurrent facial also doubles as an lymphatic drainage massage. “That’s why you were less puffy afterward,” she tells me. “We’re hitting a lot of the pressure points on the face.”
Microcurrent facials keep skin firm.
“Results are the eyes will be lifted, the forehead gets tighter, and you’ll see more of an ‘awakened’ look,” Rodriguez says. “It also stimulates collagen, so you’ll have a fuller look as well. Collagen is the main protein the body has to build muscle. As we age, we lose collagen.” As Rodriguez explains, microcurrent has been shown to encourage the production of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate), which leads to the creation of structural proteins like elastin and collagen.
The procedure starts out like a regular facial.
The entire process included cleansing, LED light therapy, exfoliation, serums, and masking. Rodriguez applied a thin film of a conductive gel on me (you can use any water-based gel) then used a microcurrent machine, which had two wands that the electrical current ran through. I didn’t feel any discomfort nor pain, just the cool metal wands lifting sections of my face and staying put for a few seconds and repeating before moving to the next section. “It’s sending a signal for the muscle that this is where it belongs,” Rodriguez says of “training” the facial tissue by going over different parts of your face multiple times.

Sleep Cycle App: The smartphone apps like Sleep Cycle use the average human’s sleep pattern to determine the best window of time that you should wake up. The idea is that interrupting the “wrong” sleep cycle stage, such as slow-wave (“deep”) sleep or REM (rapid eye movement, when dreaming occurs), results in grogginess upon awakening, as many of us can attest. Sleep researchers call this phenomenon “sleep inertia.”
It’s such a big deal that, in the sleep laboratory, we techs are instructed not to wake participants if they’re in REM, even if the experimental recording time is over.
So when a friend told me that he only feels refreshed after (according to his sleep-tracking app) eight REM cycles, I was a little skeptical, given the average person will only experience four or five REM periods per night.
What’s the verdict on sleep-tracking apps? How do they work, and how accurate are they? Is it all a big scam, or perhaps the placebo effect at work?
How is sleep measured in the first place? To understand the premise of these apps, we must first understand how scientists quantify sleep: polysomnography.
Polysomnography (poly = many, somnus = sleep, graphein = to write) comprises of a series of electrodes (the electroencephalogram or EEG) designed to measure cortical brain activity. These electrodes pick up voltage fluctuations in ionic current flow across the particular area of neurons below which each electrode is strategically placed. These fluctuations appear like waves on the computer monitor. In addition to the EEG, various sensors are also placed on the body to detect breathing and movement throughout the night.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently recognizes four (formerly five) stages of sleep: three non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stages (N1, N2, N3), and REM. As an individual proceeds throughout the night, several characteristic features define each stage on the polysomnogram.

As the name suggests, these lamps consist of blue LEDs that range in power from fractions of a watt to a few watts. They emit a cold blue light, which is why they are so safe. The light cannot burn the skin or gums. The wavelength is typically in the range of 430-490 nanometers. This wavelength activates different chemical compounds including but not limited to hydrogen peroxide. The best bleaching agent for teeth is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) teeth whitening gel. Because blue LED light activates H2O2 gel so well, and blue LED light is so safe, it is no wonder that today most bleaching lights in the teeth whitening industry are of this type.
PLASMA
Plasma lights are excellent for teeth whitening because they are very powerful, but they are also very expensive. They have other dental uses, namely curing composites quickly and effectively. However, few dentists have one. For teeth whitening, they are definitely overkill unless your dental practice will use it frequently for other procedures, but they are out of the question for non-dentists.
