Lasers, when used at the appropriate wavelength, act on the treatment by exciting porphyrins inside acne bacteria, which will damage the bacterium’s cell wall enough to kill it. The downside is that this treatment can cause some discomfort and might darken skin or create folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles.

Light therapy, also known as, is an interesting alternative as it is safe for nearly anyone, and its side effects are mild. In this form of treatment, visible light is used to treat mild to moderate acne outbreaks. Furthermore, blue and red light are also types of phototherapy for acne treatment. It has fairly easy access and can be administered in a dermatologist’s office or at home by portable devices. Although there is no official cure for acne, light therapy is remarkably effective for treating acne lesions, especially acne that’s caused by inflammation or bacteria.
