Everything You Should Know About Using Vitamin C For Your Skin

Vitamin C

Of all the skincare ingredients we have come across or tried, vitamin C has enjoyed its ubiquitous status for the longest time. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert on beauty, you must have heard of this antioxidant and its undeniable benefits for the skin. If you haven’t yet included it in your routine, confused about its usage, or not sure when and how to introduce it in your existing skincare regime, allow us to make the process simpler for you.

First things first, what is vitamin C? This antioxidant isn’t produced by the body on its own, thus when we talk about it with regards to our skin, we understand it needs to be applied topically. One way in which it helps is by aiding cell repair. Our skin is constantly attacked by free radicals from the air we breathe, cigarette smoke, UV rays from sunlight, and stress. These free radicals damage the upper layer of the skin impacting its moisture barrier, colour, texture and functioning.

“Apart from that, vitamin C also suppresses the development of melanin in the skin to help ease hyper-pigmentation and dark spots. In that process, it level out the skin tone, which results in radiant and healthy glow,” says Arushi Thapar, Senior Marketing Manager, Plum.

How Does It Work?

Vitamin C essentially helps in preventing and slowing down the signs of ageing. “The biggest benefit is its assistance in boosting collagen production, fighting wrinkles, and firming and strengthening the skin barrier,” says Thapar. Be warned, however, it is a highly reactive ingredient. It loses its antioxidant properties when exposed to light and air.

An important point to note here is that vitamin C is usually available in pairing with other derivatives is to make it stable. Such a product, when applied on the skin, releases vitamin C. Its reactiveness is the reason that it comes in airtight and opaque glass bottles to keep it from oxidising. Once oxidised, it loses its effectiveness and might end up irritating the skin.
