The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a popular hair removal technique that utilizes a scalpel to exfoliate dead skin cells from the face manually. It is a physical exfoliation technique that involves shaving the top layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, dead skin layer, and vellus hair, aka peach fuzz, with a sterile surgical scalpel. This procedure results in ultra-smooth, youthful, and radiant skin. However, is Dermaplaning a fad? Or is it a worthwhile investment? The following are some advantages and disadvantages:

Dermaplaning Pros and Cons
Dermaplaning Pros and Cons

PROS:

  • No-pain exfoliation of the stratum corneum.
  • Little to no downtime.
  • Excellent for clients with sensitive skin and pregnant women seeking deep exfoliation.
  • It can be performed before facials, laser, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels for increased product penetration.
  • Assists in the application of makeup more smoothly and evenly.
  • It can significantly lighten post-inflammatory acne scars.
  • It does not cause hair to regrow thicker or darker.

CONS:

  • It is typically more expensive than other hair removal methods.
  • The results may not be as long-lasting as those obtained through other hair removal methods, such as waxing, because the hair is not removed from the root.
  • Results vary according to each client’s unique hair growth cycle.
  • Not everyone is a candidate. Clients who have active or cystic acne should avoid this hair removal method because it can aggravate their condition. Additionally, it is contraindicated for clients with hirsutism, a condition in which women experience excessive male-pattern hair growth.
