Medtronic Takes the Gloves Off in Patent War with Axonics

0

Medtronic and Axonics are at it again, and the gloves are definitely off now. To be fair, the proverbial gloves probably came off a long time ago, but the latest spat between the two companies makes it clear that neither is pulling any punches.

  • Medtronic pioneered the sacral neuromodulation (SNM) market over 20 years ago with its InterStim device, used to treat various bladder and bowel conditions.
  • Along came Axonics Modulation Technologies with FDA approval last year for a rechargeable version of a similar device.
  • The market incumbent almost immediately filed a lawsuit against Axonics, alleging infringement on certain claims in seven patents related to Medtronic’s SNM lead placement procedure and implant recharging technologies. Or, as Axonics CEO Raymond Cohen puts it, “We said, ‘look, this is typical big company anti-competitive behavior … and we think it’s bogus’.”
  • Axonics filed seven petitions with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) requesting an inter partes review (IPR) of each of the Medtronic patents in question.
  • Medtronic catches up with the market challenger by winning FDA approval of its rechargeable SNM device.

Axonics found out Wednesday that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the USPTO has decided to review the validity of six of the seven Medtronic patents in question. This means that the PTAB has reason to believe that at least some, if not all, of the claims in each of those six patents will be found invalid.

They would not have issued the statement if they did not believe there was a ‘reasonable likelihood that some if not all of the claims in those patents would be found to be invalid’, Axonics CEO Raymond Cohen told MD+DI, emphasizing that he was quoting directly from the PTAB’s statement. “We didn’t just make this shit up.”

However, the PTAB decided not to institute a review of one of the patents — (U.S. Patent No. 9,463,324 (‘324 patent) — because there is not a reasonable likelihood that any of the claims in that particular patent would be found to be invalid. According to Medtronic, the ‘324 patent protects key technology related to implant recharging and temperature control and is central to the infringement case pending against Axonics.   Read More..

TicWatch 3 Pro is the first Wear OS smartwatch with a Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip

Mobvoi says its new TicWatch 3 Pro smartwatch its most advanced model yet, and a big part of this bold statement is that it’s the first to be officially announced with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 chipset inside. The hope is the new chip will give watches with Google’s Wear OS software a serious boost in performance. Aside from what we’re expecting from the new chip, the TicWatch 3 Pro itself is exciting, as it’s thinner, lighter, stronger, and has a higher battery capacity than the previous version.

Qualcomm has made some bold claims about the new Snapdragon Wear 4100, saying it should be 85% faster than the old Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, and provide a 25% improvement in battery life, too. It’s effectively an entry-level smartphone chipset, which has plenty of power — the question is whether the power savings come out in real-world use. One of the core problems with the old 3100 smartwatches is how poor their battery life was.

In the TicWatch 3 Pro, it’s paired to the unusual dual-screen layout which made the TicWatch Pro and TicWatch Pro 4G/LTE so energy efficient. The main 1.4-inch screen has a second LCD screen on top of it, just like you can see in the image below. It’s used for always-on duties and very effectively extends the battery life both this way and through using special software modes.

Mobvoi says the watch’s 577mAh battery will last for 72 hours using a “Smart Mode,” but it’s not clear how many functions this will restrict to reach this time, if any. Put the TicWatch 3 Pro in Extended Mode and the battery will last for an impressive 45 days before needing a recharge. Despite the big battery the watch is still only 12.2mm thick with a 47mm case size.

On the fitness side, the TicWatch 3 Pro will track SpO2 blood oxygen, which also works when tracking sleep, plus there’s a stress monitor, a heart rate monitor, a barometer, and GPS.

There are several new apps made to take advantage of all these sensors, including a mindfulness app called TicBreathe, TicSleep for sleep tracking, and new exercise modes which include mountain climbing. Of course, there’s no major update to Wear OS in conjunction with this release, so it’s otherwise identical on the core software front.

4D Hifu Machine

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) treatment has become one of the most sought-after lifting treatments for face, neck & body, without going under the knife. Just one session will tighten and lift the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin tone, providing visible results that will last up to 3 years. HIFU has proven effective on sagging jaws/chins, crows feet, forehead frown lines and much more. Treatment time takes between 1 – 3 hours depending on the area we are treating. Plus with no downtime you can be back at your usual routine immediately after.

4D HIFU Non-Surgical Face Lift

Individually it targets brow, jowl and neck lifting, as well as overall skin tightening, rejuvenation and deeper fat cells. You will see an incredible, noticeable improvement with just one treatment. The technology is unique in its ability to penetrate the dermis and the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which is deeper than all other non-invasive treatments.

The SMAS is the layer that sits between the muscle and the fat, it is the actual area a plastic surgeon would pull and tighten under the knife. Therefore the SMAS is the same area tightened during conventional surgery, however, unlike surgery, HIFU is more affordable and requires no time off work.

HIFU is the most effective treatment available as a safe alternative to surgery. It can be used on the body to target fat & tighten up the skin or on the face as a facelift and even the double chin. HIFU targets deeper layers under the skin, the same layer that is targeted during surgery.

HIFU fires ultrasound waves that cause micro injuries deep under the surface of the skin, this results in an increase production of collagen and leads to a firmer and tighter skin. HIFU treatment for the body uses deeper levels of HIFU, this effectively breaks down the fat cells while also firming & tightening the skin.

HIFU Face lifting can be used for blurred jawlines, nasal folds, sagging eyelids, loose neck folds, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone or texture and large pores. HIFU machines have many different cartridges, these can treat various problem areas at the same time.

What is HIFU?

HIFU is a highly precise medical procedure using high intensity focused ultrasound to heat and destroy pathogenic tissue rapidly. HIFU was first developed and widespread for the treatment of prostate cancer. As HIFU treatment was used for prostate cancer, scientist seen that the mens genitals were starting firm & tighten. This has now developed into tightening and lifting the face and effectively breaking down the fat cells. HIFU technology was developed in the USA.

The non-invasive treatment, was FDA approved to lift skin on the neck, on the eyebrow and under the chin as well as to improve lines and wrinkles on the décolletage in 2009 and 2012. This has since been used for treatment of the vagina to help tighten the muscular and superficial tissue, as well as being used to increase moisture and sensitivity during sexual intercourse.     Read More..

The Ultrasonic Spatula

The Ultrasonic Spatula creating new waves in your skincare treatments.
The spatula comes partially charged but you may want to plug it in for a short time to fully charge it!

Ultrasonic sound waves act on the body in the following way: they stimulate cells. The tiny massage
it produces expands the space in which the cells exist, causing movement of cytoplasm, the rotation
of mitochondria, and the vibration of the cell nucleus; it stimulates and expands the cell membrane.
It improves local blood and lymph circulation, and increases the penetration of skin enhancing
products.

Warming and heating action is one of the most important therapeutic factors of Ultrasound. It is a
kind of internal heat, with an increase of about 79-80% – this heat is carried away by the blood
circulation and is not perceived by the client. This warming action can change the blood circulation
and help to reduce inflammation. It is of great benefit prior plastic surgery to reduce swelling and
after the healing process is well on its way to reduce puffiness. It produces a relaxing and comforting
effect on the client.

Small doses of ultrasound can promote the synthesis of protein inside the cells, help to regenerate
wounded tissues and promote the synthesis of fiber cells in the body. The accelerated metabolism of
the cells changes the pH level of the skin to a more alkaline state and facilitates the absorption of any
induced products. The skin visibly lightens and smooths.
The Ultrasonic Spatula is the new generation of microdermabrasion or what is being called “soft
peeling”. There is little to no redness or downtime with this treatment. This unit offers ablation or
retexturing results with the safe and gentle use of ultrasound vibration of up to 28,000 cycles per
second.

Apple Health guide: The powerful fitness app

Apple Health: It is a place where you can store and track all of your health and fitness data in one place.

Whether that’s steps, cycling, runs or even more serious health data like blood pressure and glucose levels, Apple Health can draw data from trackers, smartwatches, scales and other devices and put them in one place.

After its launch in 2014, it has evolved to become somewhere where even more of that data can live and be pulled in from devices like the Apple Watch, the iPhone, sleep monitors or third party apps like Strava. It’s more useful than it has ever been.

Whether you’re just getting to know  for the first time or looking for ways to get more out of the software, we break down how it works, what it can track and much more.

Where can you find Apple Health?

The  lives on the iPhone home screen and in the Apple Watch app screen if you have one of those handy too.

What can you track on Apple Health?

A lot is the simple answer. One thing to be clear of is that Apple Health isn’t capable of tracking anything on its own. This is all about pulling in that information from the device it’s installed on, compatible third party apps and devices.

To give you a flavour,  can store data including:

  • Steps
  • Walking + Running Distance
  • Flights Climbed
  • Heart rate
  • Nutrition
  • Sleep Analysis
  • Heart rate variability
  • Weight

These are all listed as Health Categories in the Browse section of the app.

When you expand those different categories, you’ll find most recent data tracked dependent on devices and apps pushing data to it.

In many instances where you might not currently be tracking a particular piece of data, Apple does make app recommendations that work with Health to help you start to do that.

What devices work with Apple Health?

Then there’s a sizeable collection of third party devices that can widen the type of data that’s stored. These include:

  • Upright Go 2 posture trainer
  • La Roche-Posay My Skin UV sensor
  • Beddit Sleep monitor
  • Withings BPM Connect Wi-Fi smart blood pressure monitor
  • Withings Thermo thermometer
  • Withings Body Cardio Wi-Fi smart scales
  • Withings Body scales
