Telemedicine and Digital Health to Set the Tone for Healthcare

Digital health, especially telemedicine, is going to play a prominent role in healthcare going forward, a panel at the Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit said on Tuesday.

The focus on digital health has been spurred by the outbreak of COVID-19. One of the viruses’ long-lasting impacts is sure to be the rapid integration of telemedicine.

During the panel, Matt Kull, Chief Information Officer of Cleveland Clinic, spoke noted that telemedicine isn’t going to be another fad.

On the telehealth perspective, I think that’s here to stay,” Kull told fellow panel members during the innovation summit. “I think that’s going to become the norm and it’s going to allow us to reach more people where they are and ways they want to be met.”

Kull’s comments echo three physician surveys conducted by Jason Mills, a medtech analyst at Canaccord Genuity.  Mills and colleagues also noted the shift to telehealth in a report published April 13th.

“The COVID-19 pandemic set off an accelerated shift to virtual communication in nearly every forum in which humans interact and, similarly, the medical device sector is also embracing the virtual world and will perhaps continue to do so long after the COVID crisis abates,” Mills and colleagues wrote.

During the Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit, the panel was asked if the idea of telemedicine was under-or-over-hyped. Richard Zane, MD, Chief Innovation Officer of UC Health chimed in on the question.

“Telemedicine is far under-hyped,” Zane said. “The future of whatever we’re going to describe as virtual care is going to scale very quickly and very robustly.”

Virtual is the new black right now,” Erskine said. “We’re at the top of the curve. We went from 100 visits to 12,000 visits a day. But we still have to digitally upscale our providers and we still have to digitally upscale our patients – the ones that are not used to navigating across all these new technologies themselves.”

Fastic Fasting App & Intermittent Fasting Tracker

When doing research on which apps to review, I went to the app stores, Google, Reddit, Quora, friends, and Youtube and chose the 10 best fasting apps below as my favorites.

I’ve tried to look for both more fresh, perhaps a bit less known (but still very good) apps, as well as some of the most downloaded ones.

Also, the first 3 of my chosen apps were happy to collaborate and make this review possible, so a big thanks goes to them.

The first fasting app on the list is called DoFasting. Available on both Android and Apple devices, DoFasting is one of the best intermittent fasting apps I’ve tried. While most of the fasting apps are just fasting trackers, DoFasting is really sort of your personal intermittent fasting assistant.

These are the main reasons to get DoFasting app:

  • Personalization. It all starts with a short quiz right at the beginning, which tailors the app to your needs and goals. It will ask you about your level of fasting expertise, eating preferences, fitness level, and a few other questions.
  • Fasting Tracking. You can choose the fasting schedule you’d like to follow from 6 available presets based on difficulty as well as set your eating window times.
  • Personalized meal plans. Based on your answers on the sign-up quiz, you get your daily caloric intake. It also includes recipes and macros that make following a meal plan really easy. A super handy feature if you want to improve what you eat, not only when you eat.
  • Workout Plan. Based on your fitness level settings, you get workout suggestions with the full exercise plan and video demos. What’s great is that exercises are short and can be done in a home environment.
  • Tips. DoFasting has a section called ‘Tips’; that is what it says – it gives you tips and knowledge on intermittent fasting. Lots of knowledge that is easily accessible at all times. Pretty standard, but really handy feature.
  • Weight Tracking. Finally, you can track your weight, fasting and workout history in your PROFILE tab. I like how visual it is, shows your current weight and how much weight did you lose.
  • Flexible fasting tracker. When you open the app, the first thing you see is a very clear fasting tracker. What’s great is how flexible setting the fasting time is. Just press the + and – buttons and easily set the number of hours you want to fast that day.
  • Various tracking features. Besides fasting, you can also log your weight, waist circumference, glucose, and ketones. Probably one of the most advanced trackers as well!
  • In-app community. Another feature that makes LIFE fasting app really stand out is called Circles. It’s basically an in-app fasting groups that allows you to see other users fasting, their overall fasting statistics as well as send them a DM. You can join one of the 60k existing circles or create your own with the people you know. I’ve created our own circle called 21 Day Hero Fasters – feel free to join this one!
  • Collection of intermittent fasting articles and videos. Under the ‘Learn’ tab, you will find the ‘Learning Library’: plenty of science-backed information on intermittent fasting and other similar health topics and how to make this journey more successful.
  • Feed feature. You also have your feed, which will fill up with posts from your fellow fasters in your circles. You can post your own updates, interact with others and simply follow each other’s journey. One of the key components needed to achieve the results you’re looking for!
  • Your fasting statistics. In the ‘Profile’ section, you will have your fasting statistics all in one place. It even shows the hours in ketosis part, which is basically the part during which Intermittent Fasting does its magic.

Smartphone-Based Ophthalmoscope Simplifies Diagnosis of Common Eye Diseases

A smartphone-based digital ophthalmoscope shows promise as both a teaching tool and an inexpensive, easy-to-use examination instrument for public health services, according to a recent study led by Dr. Claudia Campos at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. The device, known as the D-EYE Smartphone-based Retinal Imaging System, is designed to attach to iOS and Android devices via a specially designed, lightweight bumper. The D-EYE was examined by a team of physicians to determine if the system was a beneficial alternative for residents in comparison to the traditional ophthalmoscope.

A poster presentation displaying the results of the study, which concluded that using smartphone technology to perform funduscopic examinations is a promising teaching tool, was given at the Society of General Internal Medicine’s annual conference, held May 11-14 of this year.

D-EYE uses the principle of direct ophthalmology—utilizing the phone’s camera lens and LED light source, which is off-axis from the camera aperture, to illuminate the interior of the eye for examination, resulting in no corneal glare. The examiner focuses the camera lens on the retina and begins the recording and post processing. Examiners will also be able to send the recorded images wirelessly to an optional HIPAA-compliant private and secure cloud-based data and image storage service, for further evaluation and archiving.

When the pupil is dilated, the device captures a field of view of approximately 20 degrees in a single fundus image at a distance of 1 cm from the patient’s eye. When examining an un-dilated eye, the field of view is approximately 5-8 degrees. Panning the lens during examinations, while using the video function, greatly expands the coverage area. These capabilities enable the D-EYE to be used as a diagnostic tool for viewing a variety of conditions of the eye, including the leading causes of blindness: glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. In addition, the D-EYE can detect blood vessel abnormalities, possible hemorrhages, optic disorders, neuritis, hypertensive retinopathy and more.

The Wake Forest Baptist study consisted of a workshop reviewing retinal pathologies and funduscopic techniques with 28 participants.  During the course of the study, D-EYE was used with iPhone 5/6 and Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphones and compared to the traditional portable ophthalmoscope. Using D-EYE, most residents were able to capture the optic disk during their very first attempt following the D-EYE app’s instructions.

LED Light Therapy Mask

Previously confined to the four walls of a facialist’s salon, light therapy is now making its way into the mainstream, with several brands offering at-home devices promising transformative results. But are these masks and tools efficacious, and, more importantly, safe in untrained hands?

Research has proven that LED treatments can effectively treat a multitude of skin concerns, but the results are cumulative, meaning you won’t see long-term benefits from that single salon trip you treat yourself to once a year. If regular appointments aren’t an option, an at-home device could be the answer.

What is light therapy?

“Light therapy, or LED treatments have been around for over 30 years and were originally developed for astronauts to help with tissue healing and repair,” explains Dr. Zamani.

According to dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, the benefits of LED light therapy are manifold. They include treating acne, regulating natural oil production, stimulating collagen and elastin and minimising redness and wrinkles. Certain wavelengths have even been shown to reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone.

As the spectrum of light used does not include UV, there’s no risk of damage – and no, you won’t get a tan.

How does light therapy work?

“LED therapy uses light in the visible spectrum – including blue, yellow, amber and red – as well as light beyond the visible spectrum to penetrate different depths of skin. As the light wavelength increases, so does the depth of penetration,” explains Dr. Gross. This light is absorbed by receptors in the skin, just like topical skincare, and each colour of light stimulates a different response in the skin. LED is suitable for use on all skin types and tones.

How to use an LED tool at home

Today, there’s a small but growing list of options when it comes to at-home light therapy devices. For a complete facial treatment, a mask is the most obvious investment, but the emergence of targeted ‘wands’ and smaller (more portable) treatment lights is especially interesting for treating areas of acne-prone skin.

Diabetes Platform Dubbed Best mHealth App

Gendius announced this week that it won the “Best mHealth Application” award at the Health Tech Digital Awards 2020 with its diabetes remote management platform, Intellin. The Intellin platform is designed to help people with diabetes track and monitor their condition. The platform analyzes patients’ clinical history and metabolic markers to forecast their risk for developing serious diabetes-related complications.

We are thrilled that our Intellin platform has been recognized as the leading mHealth application for 2020 by the Health Tech Digital expert judges,” said Gendius CEO Rory Cameron. “With the unique healthcare challenges that have been thrown up by COVID-19, remote management technology is now more important than ever, especially for long-term conditions like diabetes. We have some exciting new developments on the horizon for Intellin, which are going to give people with diabetes even more tools to monitor and control their condition.”

Launched in January 2020, Intellin has already seen outstanding growth, with over 375,000 downloads worldwide, and more than 70,000 monthly active users. It is one of the top scoring diabetes apps in the ORCHA app library and has been welcomed as an exciting development in diabetes care by clinicians, according to the company.

In a review of Intellin, in collaboration with the Organization for the Review of Care and Health Apps, Tom Micklewright, MD, called Intellin “the FitBit of diabetes apps.”

It is an incredibly comprehensive tracking tool for monitoring a huge range of different variables that matter to diabetics,” Micklewright said. “The most valuable bit is you can go to the priorities section off the app. What the priorities section does, is draw all of the information from the tracking you have done together to highlight your highest risk areas as a diabetic. It flags the high-risk areas, explains that risk, and then offers tailored advice to the patient.”

Gendius said it recently entered into a strategic partnership with AstraZeneca in the Gulf region. The partnership will see healthcare professionals across the Gulf using the Intellin platform to optimize their patients’ diabetes management, the company said.

LOROMASK Lite

The FLOROMASK Lite gives you all the benefits of LED light Therapy but in a more lightweight package. The portable design makes it easy to take with you on those trips where you must pack light but still want to pamper yourself.

Floromask Lite uses a soft healing light with 3 different treatment programs and healing effects.

The 3 healing treatments that you can select from are:

Blue light therapy: Kills acne and other bacteria.
Red light therapy: Improves blood circulation and nutrient supply to the skin.
Yellow light therapy: Helps to reduce inflammation

Dermatologist recommendation:

Use the Floromask lite in combination with a sheet mask to supercharge its properties.

In-office LED light therapy requires up to 10 sessions or more, each spaced out about a week apart. You may start to see minor results after your first session. Results will be more dramatic and noticeable once you’ve finished all of your treatments.
Even after you’ve achieved the recommended number of sessions, your results aren’t permanent.
As your skin cells turn over, you may lose some collagen and start to see signs of aging again. You may also start to see acne breakouts. This is why it’s recommended that you go back for maintenance treatments every few months or as recommended by your provider.

Home LED light therapy treatments aren’t as fast because the light frequencies aren’t as high in order to be safe for home use. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
