Navigate Your Diabetes Diagnosis With The DEXCOM G6

This newest iteration of the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring System features a slimmer profile, 10-day sensor wear and no requirement for calibrations with a finger stick. I’ve been using the system for 20 days now, having recently completed my second sensor.

How To Use Dexcom G6?

Application: There was an important first step where I had to input a code printed on the back of my sensor into the G6 app on my phone to proceed without the need for any calibrations.

The sensors now come encased in a one touch insertion device. I was admittedly a little nervous about this. I prefer manual inserts where I can, as it gives me a lot more confidence that everything has gone in correctly and I haven’t bruised my precious real estate. That being said, insertion was so much simpler and quicker than its predecessor. All I had to do was stick the sensor onto my skin, remove the safety lock and press the orange button.

Components

Transmitter: The G6 transmitter sits on top of the sensor and sends blood glucose readings to the Dexcom G6 app on my phone every five minutes via Bluetooth. The transmitter features a much slimmer profile than the G5, and I definitely noticed an improvement while I was sitting on the couch or laying in bed. Transmitters are a costly component of running a CGM, and I would have liked to see this last longer than three months.

Sensor wear: I’m always wanting to get more out of my diabetes gear, so it’s good to see that G6 sensors are now approved for 10-day wear. Although as someone who tries to line most of my diabetes tasks up with the weekend, 10 days is admittedly inconvenient. Saturday, next Tuesday, the following Friday.

UV Light Sanitizers

Life in 2021 is fast and technology-driven. It brings with it a rapidly evolving lifestyle, including new ways to stay clean. Proper hygiene has currently become crucial in the wake of the global spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. With that in mind, not to mention the usual flu season, it is essential to stay aware of basic hygiene habits and keep your supplies stocked with soaps, wipes, and sanitizers. In this article, we are going to talk about UV light sanitizers and the best models that you can get your hands on.

What Is A UV Light Sanitizer? Why Do You Need A UV Light Sanitizer?

Between soaps, face washes, hand washes, and cleansing gels, there are a million products out there to help you keep your skin clean and germ-free. But what about the objects around you? Take your phone, for example – you are constantly scrolling through multiple apps all day, and it’s not always after washing your hands. Bottom line: there’s an army of microbes living on your stuff.

A UV light sanitizer is like the equivalent of your tech devices and other objects taking a shower every day. You can use one on plastic and glass objects to rid them of germs. A UV light sanitizer, as the name suggests, uses UV light to sanitize products and surfaces, making them free of illness-causing pathogens.

How Do UV Light Sanitizers Work?

A UV light sanitizer makes use of the UV-C light in the ultraviolet light spectrum (the others are UV-A and UV-B). UV-C light is capable of killing germs and has a wide range of effectiveness. UV-C light can interfere with and destroy nucleic acids in bacteria.

Introducing the New 3D Printed KINETIC HAND DESIGN

What Is The 3D Kinetic Hand Design?

This month, designer Mat Bowtell released his long-awaited 3D Kinetic Hand, a new open-source design supported by an illustrated 99-page assembly manual. Initially modeled from a 3D scan of his own hand, the design was made using a virtual clay modeling software called Geomagic Free-form Plus and engineered in Solidworks.

The current model includes more than a dozen novel features, like the flexible and resilient split hinges for the digits. His team is excited to release his work and learn from the needs of the global community.

About Free 3D Hands

As part of his Engineering degree, Mat had the opportunity to study mechatronics at Chiba University in Japan, where he was first introduced to emerging bionic arm technology. In 2014, Mat joined the e-NABLE community on Google+ and became an active and innovative member in the early days.

When the plant closed down in 2017, Mat used his redundancy severance pay to volunteer full time making hands. After receiving a Westpac Social Change Fellowship grant, he undertook a world tour to meet with experts in prosthetics, bionics, and 3D printing. He met e-NABLE’s Ivan Owen, co-creator of the first 3d printed hand and Jen Owen, co-founder of e-NABLE and creator of enablingthefuture.org.

Today, Mat is the founder and director of a charity called Free 3D Hands. With 109 solar panels and two Tesla Powerwall batteries powering a 30kW system, the team can run 30 3D printers day and night from the power of the sun.

Mat and his team have kept busy during the pandemic by 3D printing 6000 free face shields. They’ve also been creating assembly manuals and developing a low-cost Bionic Arm. We have added the Kinetic hand to the e-NABLE Devices Catalog and it has made a big impression on the Hub!

Many people are aiming to achieve six-pack abs, but not all of them are successful.

If you are not familiar with an ab belt or haven’t used one yet before, here are the benefits you can get if you start using this fitness gadget:

Tones Your Muscles With Minimal Effort

Physiotherapists are using ab belts during rehabilitation sessions. This useful device utilizes electrical pulses that can stimulate the muscles in the abdominal region. This allows you to work on your abs while you are doing household chores, watching TV, or even sitting in your office doing your daily tasks. Amazing, right? You no longer have to go to the gym every single day to work out hard.

With proper diet and exercise, you will surely get incredible results sooner or later.

Allows the User to Relax

Oftentimes, when you are stressed out or depressed, you feel like you don’t want to do anything. Well, anyone who is not in a good mood wouldn’t want to exercise. But did you know that the electrical current that an ab stimulator produces can serve like a massage that can relax you? The sensation can aid in relieving stress while putting you in a better mood.

Simply put, using an ab belt benefits you not only physically but also psychologically.

Provides Comfort

Wearing an ab stimulator is very comfortable too because it is made with breathable materials. Plus, it is lightweight. Unlike the other exercises that target your abdominal region, putting this device on does not wear you out. It is fairly easy to use too. All you have to do is literally put it on, adjust its settings, and you are good to go. This is why medical professionals also recommend this gadget to their patients who are bedridden.

Best Migraine Hats To Save You From Debilitating Migraine Pain

Migraine is “more than just a headache.” What do you do when a migraine hits you? Probably run for ice to dull the pain? Some people fashion their cold compress by putting ice into plastic bags while others may apply a frozen gel pack over their heads. All this requires a little more effort – which might not be possible when we are brain fogged.

The impending mess also adds to the agony! Sometimes, you wake up to a soaking wet bed if the plastic bursts.

How Does A Migraine Hat Work?

A migraine hat or a band is a handsfree and soft adjustable band that wraps around your head. The ice gel pack is placed inside the band – which is also long enough to cover your head. It is adjustable, which means you can loosen or tighten it to target the pressure points. The cold and compressing therapy provided by the migraine caps has a numbing effect that helps reduce pain sensation.

As already discussed, the hassles with DIY ice hats are many. Another major problem with the DIY ice packs is that they obstruct fingertip compression. It claims to solve this issue by allowing you to adjust the level of compression. If you have responded well to cold or compression therapy in the past, you have reasonably good reasons to try the migraine hat. We resort to a lot of home remedies to get rid of that throbbing or pulsing pain.

Can A Handheld Scalp Massager Help Hair Grow Faster?

We’re always looking for ways to grow and maintain healthy hair. So when we hear that something like a scalp massager can theoretically help grow hair faster, we can’t help but be intrigued. But does it actually work? We ask dermatologists Francesca Fusco and Morgan Rabach to break it down for us.

What Is a Scalp Massager?

Aptly named, a scalp massager is a device that massages your scalp. It comes in many shapes and sizes (some are even electric), but most are portable and handheld. According to Fusco, it can exfoliate, loosen debris and dandruff, and increase follicle circulation. She also says scalp massagers allows serums and hair products to work better. Rabach agrees and says using a scalp massager increases blood circulation and can also help stress and tension.

How Does It Work?

Generally, you can comb or brush through hair gently with a scalp massager as it slides against the scalp. Some scalp massagers can be used in the shower on wet hair, while others, like the electric ones, should only be used on dry hair. Rabach says the best way to get the most out of the device is to use it in circular motions; this will help loosen those dead skin cells.

There is no limit to how often you should use a scalp massager. Rabach says using one in shower works great if you’re looking to get rid of dandruff or can be helpful if you have psoriasis, as those dead skin cells will be softened by the water.

Fusco likes to recommend using scalp massagers to patients with thinning hair and advises them to use it before applying products like a scalp serum; she explains that blood vessels are more dilated when circulation is excellent and that will help the skin absorb product more efficiently.

Warts and Verruca Removal Using Laser Light

How does the treatment work?

There are a couple of different ways to treat warts and verruca in the clinic. Your medical professional will assess the condition and decide what the best option will be.

The most common is excision removal. This procedure uses a surgical instrument called a curette to scrape and remove the wart/verruca. This is done after the local anesthetic is injected into the area to ensure you feel no pain. A small stitch may be needed.

Another method is using a laser. A highly targeted beam of laser light is aimed at the wart or verruca. This heats up the blood vessels which in turn destroys the blood supply to the wart. This starves the wart/verruca of nutrients, so it naturally falls off after a few weeks. This method usually involves a couple of treatments.

There are a couple of different ways to treat warts and verrucas in the clinic.

Does the treatment hurt?

With excision of a wart, the area is injected with a local anesthetic which can be uncomfortable. However, once the anesthetic starts working you shouldn’t feel any pain.

If the laser is used, you will feel a hot sting, similar to an elastic band hitting the skin. The feeling can be uncomfortable but doesn’t require any anesthetic or pain relief.

Will my wart/verruca come back?

If the wart/verruca has been successfully treated and removed, it will not come back. However, if the virus that caused the wart/verruca is still active in your body, there is a chance that new warts/verrucas will grow.

LET US TALK ALL ABOUT LASER SKIN LIGHTENING

Do you have blemishes or dark patches on your skin? Laser skin lightening is one way to get rid of them. It removes the outer part of the skin and damages the cells which produce the pigment melanin. Sounds scary right? But don’t be afraid, if it is done by a professional then there is nothing to worry about.

How is It Done?

  1. We test a small area to see any untoward reaction. If no problem, we do the laser treatment a few weeks after.
  2. The practitioner applies a cream to numb the area so you won’t get a stinging or pricking sensation during the procedure.
  3. They give you special goggles for eye protection from the laser.
  4. The laser device is held against your skin.
  5. Cold air is blown to your skin to keep it cool during the treatment.

Laser sessions generally between 30 minutes to an hour. Right after the treatment, you can go home right away.

How long is the recovery time?

Generally, it takes 1 to 2 weeks until you recover from laser skin lightening. Take a few days off in your work until you get better. Red and swollen skin is just a common side effect of the treatment. You can also experience bruising and crusting of your skin. After few weeks, your skin color should start to fade into a lighter one. Protect your skin from direct sunlight for the next six months.
