Generally, the answer to this question is ‘Yes’. Your dermatologist will advise you on what to avoid prior to laser hair removal treatment, but we’ll go over some common preparations. As you may already be aware, laser hair removal is most effective on individuals with fair skin and dark hair. That is not to say it will not work for people with darker skin and lighter hair; however, you may require additional treatments.
Your dermatologist may determine that the treatment is not appropriate for your skin tone or hair color in some cases. Thus, the most important factor in maintaining high contrast is to avoid exposure to sunlight for approximately a month and a half prior to treatment. When you must spend time in the sun, apply sunscreen daily to prevent tanning.
In some cases, your dermatologist may prescribe a skin bleaching cream to apply to the treatment area prior to the laser to help maximize its effectiveness.
The skin bleaching effect is only temporary, and the skin reverts to its natural color upon discontinuation of use. For approximately a month prior to laser hair removal, you should abstain from all hair removal methods, including plucking, electrolysis, and waxing. These processes may cause the laser to miss hair follicles that are simply lying low following their removal, resulting in the regrowth of new hair.
Finally, you will almost certainly be asked to shave the area the day before treatment. This allows the laser to focus exclusively on the follicle, rather than on the hair above, which can result in superficial burns on the skin’s surface.
