Whether you’re dealing with a stray chin hair or a bit of fuzz above your upper lip, remember this: It’s totally normal for women to have facial hair.
But if it bothers you, you can get rid of facial hair at home with a little bit of skin prep and the right tools.
There are a couple of types of hair you may notice on your face, and it’s good to get acquainted with both, says Mona Gohara, M.D., board-certified dermatologist with Dermatology Physicians of Connecticut and member of the Prevention Medical Review Board.
Terminal hairs are dark, thick hairs, so they’re more prominent. Then, there are the lanugo hairs, which are soft, fine baby hairs that you might notice on your cheek area (a.k.a. peach fuzz).
“Oftentimes facial hair is genetic or a normal part of someone’s ethnicity,” says Dr. Gohara.
Women around perimenopausal or menopausal age may also see extra hairs sprout up as estrogen drops and testosterone remains unopposed, allowing for hair growth, she says.
It can also be a sign of a hormonal problem. For instance, in polycystic ovary syndrome, excess androgen (“male” hormones) can trigger facial hair.
But you’d likely have other symptoms pop up as well, says Dr. Gohara, like irregular periods or acne. Talking to your doctor can help you get the necessary tests done, and treating the underlying problem will help control the unwanted hair growth.
Otherwise, the best way to get rid of facial hairs is to see your dermatologist, who can safely use effective devices like lasers, says Dr. Gohara.
But that’s not possible for everyone, whether it’s due to time, expense, preference, or not having access to a derm. That’s where products like wax kits, tweezers, and epilators come in.

Find the right tools: Most women want the hair completely gone, so a trimmer won’t usually cut it, says Dr. Gohara, unless you’re willing to consistently touch up.
