Microcurrent devices deliver electrical currents to the skin, claiming to subtly lift and firm the face in as little as five minutes. However, are at-home skincare devices worth the investment? We solicited input from dermatologists and here are the details:
Microcurrent therapy is what it sounds like.
Microcurrent therapy is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes a low-voltage current comparable to the body’s natural electrical currents. The microcurrent stimulates energy production in the skin, resulting in the formation of collagen and elastin. This can result in firmer, toned skin that appears more “lifted” on the face.
Is microcurrent therapy genuinely effective?
At the moment, there is a lack of evidence to support the lofty claims of younger-looking tighter skin. Unless a patient is young and has minimal skin laxity, to begin with, I typically do not recommend at-home devices to him.
The devices are most effective as a prejuvenation tactic, a term that combines the words “prevention” and “rejuvenation.” Microcurrent technology will undoubtedly never be a substitute for in-office treatments or surgery. If you want to achieve significant toning results, an at-home microcurrent device may not be the best investment.
Having said that, if you are still genuinely interested in preventing skin laxity and rejuvenating slightly sagging skin, microcurrent technology may provide the necessary boost.
What device options do I have?
A dermatologist can prescribe a microcurrent device, or you can purchase an at-home version.
