The Benefits That Phototherapy Can Offer for Skin Disorders

Sometimes the traditional treatments are not effective on some persistent inflammatory skin disorders and for some of those cases, phototherapy is recommended. Phototherapy can be defined as the light therapy that mimics the effects of sunlight exposure to trigger biologic processes that reduce inflammation and prevent skin cells from growing at an abnormal rate.

This treatment is commonly indicated for Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of skin cancer, Eczema (atopic dermatitis), Psoriasis and Vitiligo. Other skin disorders that also lead to itchy skin can also benefit from this technology.

It is considered safe when used responsibly and is typically administered three times a week. It is important that areas that do not need treatment be covered and protected as much as possible to avoid further problems.

There are different types of photo therapies used for different purposes:

  • Broad band UVB — Uses UVB light. It cannot be used in skin folds.
  • Narrow band UVB (nbUVB) — It uses a narrower range of UVB wavelengths. It is a high-intensity light and can reach more specific areas, even skin folds.
  • PUVA — This UVA light treatment includes a medication called psoralen that is taken before the session. It makes the skin more sensitive to the light and can be taken as a pill or applied directly to the skin.
  • Lasers — Excimer laser emits a UV light. It can be directed at specific areas of the skin.

This treatment is a process in which affected areas are exposed to special light that has the power of controlling inflammation and clears the skin. If you believe phototherapy is an option for you, look for a reliable dermatologist and ask for a test treatment.
