OPTE’S
OPTE’S

Opte Beauty: Imagine this: You wake up in the morning, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and step into your bathroom to get ready for the day. You perform your usual skincare routine, applying each layer of serum, moisturizer, and SPF with expert precision before it’s finally time to move onto your makeup. Only, instead of reaching for a bottle of foundation and a makeup sponge, you pick up a handheld 3D printer. It sounds crazy—like something out of a science fiction novel—but I assure you the device I just described is very real, and it’s called Opte.

Launched late last year, the Opte Precision System is truly a first-of-its-kind beauty innovation. Described as a “skincare and makeup hybrid device,” it’s essentially a tiny inkjet printer that scans your skin and deposits the perfect amount of pigmented serum to camouflage post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots, and sunspots.

How Does the Opte Device Work?

If you’ve ever experienced dark spots or hyperpigmentation of any kind, then you know just how tricky they can be to mask and treat. So, how does the Opte device manage to do it? “Opte is a handheld inkjet serum printer with the power to reveal skin’s natural radiance by digitally scanning skin, analyzing complexions, and camouflaging hyperpigmentation on contact while also fading sun spots over time,” explains Petersen.

“To do this, the Opte wand examines the skin using a blue LED light that pinpoints areas darker than your natural skin color. With an enhanced digital camera that captures 200 frames per second, it then instantly analyzes each image using a proprietary algorithm to detect tonal imperfections not even visible to the human eye.”

After scanning the skin for discoloration, the Opte then uses input from the algorithm to print out microscopic droplets of its tinted Spot Optimizing Serum directly onto the pigmented area to create the perfect match. Unlike foundation, which is typically used all-over, the Opte can only deposit pigment on dark spots smaller than a dime, meaning that it won’t cover any skin that’s free from discoloration.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect?

The first thing to note here is that the Opte isn’t for everyone. Those who prefer the look of an all-over, full-coverage foundation or are looking to treat more than just hyperpigmentation will likely not fall for the device’s near naked-level of coverage. As Petersen explains, “If you have hyperpigmentation, Opte is 100 percent a solution for you. However, if you are looking for it to solve other skincare problems [like acne or rosacea-induced redness, for instance], it may not be right.
