The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight is composed of a broad spectrum of rays. UV radiation damages the skin in a variety of ways. UV radiation is classified according to its wavelength. UVA wavelengths are the longest, UVB wavelengths are the medium, and UVC wavelengths are the shortest.
Because the longest wavelength has the least energy, UVA only affects the top layer of your skin. Inner cells are also affected to a degree, resulting in immediate tanning, sunburn, and so on. By contrast, UVB exposure results in delayed tanning, excessive sunburn, and blistering. These effects are wavelength-dependent, with UVA and UVB being the most concerning. UVC rays are completely absorbed by the atmosphere and pose little risk to humans. However, UVC radiation can be absorbed via UVC sanitizing lights, arc welding torches, and mercury lamps.
