If you suffer from low blood pressure (hypotension) or know somebody who does, it is very important to learn techniques to properly take care of it in emergencies at home. It is important to remember that seeking appropriate medical assistance is required to make sure there is no life risk.
Low blood pressure is most regularly defined as any reading lower than 90 mmHg over 60 mmHg. Low blood pressure without symptoms or with only mild symptoms rarely requires medical treatment. If low blood pressure causes symptoms, the treatment may depend on the cause.
If it’s not clear what’s causing low blood pressure or no treatment exists, especially in the case of a crisis, the goal is to raise blood pressure and reduce symptoms. Depending on age, health, and the type of low blood pressure, there are several ways to do this for emergency treatment at home.
- Use more salt: Although experts recommend limiting salt (sodium) because it can raise blood pressure fast, it can be good for people with low blood pressure.
- Drink more water: Fluids increase blood volume and help prevent dehydration, both of which are important in treating hypotension.
- Wear compression stockings: Also called support stockings, these elastic stockings improve blood flow from the legs to the heart.
- Medications: Several drugs are available to treat low blood pressure that occurs when standing up (orthostatic hypotension). For example, the drug fludrocortisone boosts blood volume. It’s often used to treat orthostatic hypotension. It is not recommended to use medications without a medical prescription.
