Heard of Peptides? An Expert Explains What They Mean In Skincare

Since we’ve been hit by the crushing wave of the pandemic, we’ve realised more than ever how important self-care is. That’s why many of us started investing in and trying out different skincare products. Pretty much like our lives, the skincare industry has also witnessed a huge shift in the last one year. The number of new ingredients and technology that has come in is overwhelming. Therefore, it’s essential to know what each ingredient mentioned on the label is capable of doing for our skin.

One such ingredient that has got skincare junkies talking is peptide skincare. Well, who knew that one alien-sounding chemical name we once heard in chemistry class would one day make an entry into our skincare? “There are hundreds of peptides and each one has its own distinctive way of impacting skin, that’s what makes them so amazing,” says Paula Begoun, founder of Paula’s Choice. “Each peptide or group of peptides communicates with skin to target specific concerns.”

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are chemical compounds composed of short-chain amino acids, which are building blocks of protein. These proteins — collagen, keratin, and elastin — together make the foundation of the skin, giving it strength, elasticity, firmness and texture. “Amino acids link together and create an endless array of peptides that are fundamental building blocks of skin. Each peptide directly influences how skin functions and behaves,” explains Begoun.

Peptides help in boosting collagen production in the skin by signalling it to produce more collagen. These are fragmented protein portions, so, when they are used in any skincare product, those fragments stimulate collagen growth. These smaller fragments help to get deeper into the skin layers, pushing the skin to produce more collagen and improve its elasticity.
